dr. jen ashton. how, if you do have kids in school, how do you determine whether or not to keep them home? >> this is where parents have to make a game-time decision. some of these will be medical audibles. so some last-minute you decisions. there are some basics. we like a child to have no fever for at least 24 hours off medication. that's something like tylenol or e ibuprofen. we like them to not have any physical symptoms, like vomiting, diarrhea. if they have strep throat and they're on antibiotics, we like them to be on antibiotics for at least 24 hours. if you keep your child home you have to have someone to care for the child. that is often difficult. >> it's a burden on the what can we teach oll our kids ? >> it's a great opportunity to teach our children about certain symptoms, especially the flu because they're probably hearing about it. we want them to recognize what it feels like to have a temperature. even though they might have a feverer, their temperature is high, they might feel cold,

dr. jen ashton. jen, good morning. >> good morning, guys. >> so we're hearing a lot about who could, who should take tamiflu. can you break that down for us? >> two main uses for antiviral medications and the generic form is oseltamivir. one is to treat someone who has been diagnosed with the flu or that you suspect has the flu. the other one is for prevention or prophylaxis, so these are for people who have had prolonged, direct contact with someone with known or suspected influenza and on a case-by-case basis it can be determined whether they should take tamiflu, but there are some high-risk groups and there's a long list. pregnant women, people 65 years of age or older, we will with a weakened immune system from cancer or hiv or people with chronic medical condition, diabetes, any pulmonary condition, cardiac condition, asthma and people in long-term care facilities, so it's a lot of people. they go on tamiflu to help reduce the risk that they will get sick if they've been in contact with someone

dr. jen ashton is here. good morning. is worse we get weekly numbers from the cdc and remember that a lot of our assessments come in retrospect so they come when we have a lot of data then look back to compare to last year and so we don't know whether we've peaked yet. as you mentioned, it hasn't yet been determined that we're at epidemic levels, but to be honest, the last couple of reports and the last couple of weeks look like that may be you look at the map, you can see widespread activity in almost every state and hospitalization rates have approximately doubled. and if you look at the trends this year compared to last year, we are seeing well above the numbers we saw at this time last year. so, again, does it look worse? yes, and that's because the numbers support that. >> yeah, it's jarring. so you mentioned hospitalizations. i talked earlier about the fact that hospitals in southern california that are turning people away and rerouting them. you say this is not unusual. >> yeah, well, that's called going on diversi
