dr. jill chase is here along with barry to give us some answers. dr. jill, how long is too long. we like to say when i went to veterinary school since then no more than 6 hours during the day they should go without urinating in the morning at breakfast, lunchtime and late afternoon and before bed is ideal. and do know there are some people with work schedules and they can't get to their pet for long periods of time but problems that occur are urinary tract infections and if you don't treat a urinary tract infection it can go up the your right ter to the kidney and the bladder and it can go up into the kidneys and create a problem. that's a really bad consequence. if you see your dog drinking more water or feeling kind of list less, i would definitely recommend checking the urine to see whether or not there's an infection. >> does it depend on the breed? >> no. 50% of dogs and cats may not show signs of urinary tract infection. they may have one and you don't realize it. typically animals that are 8 or older will do a urine every year and we can pick up the infection that way. >>
