if mitt romney runs he would be the overwhelming front-runner. 20%, look at the guy at number two, dr. ben nonpolitician. and then bush, christie, huckabee. here's what happens if romney does not run. jeb buescher, 14%, ben carson hangs in there at 11%. and huckabee, christie, ryan, there is no front-runner. the republican party, you normally know who the guy is we don't know who the guy is. unless romney runs, but he says he's not. the other thing that's interesting is dr. ben carson. not a politician. after this mid-term election, after the last few years of washington dysfunction it's clear that even republicans are looking, trying to think outside the box. >> one of the interesting things about romney is in january of 2011 he also was at 20% in several polls. so there is a sweet spot for romney within the republican party. but when you're talking about ben carson, he seems to be speaking to the activist class in the republican party. and they are the ones rallying behind him. they've been looking for someone to sort of carry their banner and right now, they really seem to like ben cars

the cnn poll was interesting to me because dr. ben carson came in ahead of rand paul.we're early, but i thought that considering rand paul has a lot more name recognition, his father obviously ran for president a couple of times. what do you think about the grass roots aspect of this? >> these numbers will shift a thousand times in the next couple months. but look, ben carson is something a lot of people including myself really admire. he's a world class pediatric neurosurgeon who's brilliant. a lot of activists have heard him speak across the country and say what a refreshing intelligent guy. whether he can cut it in the deep water the deep end of the pool when this really gets going remains to be seen. but it's obvious why he has some appeal for a lot of people. >> uh-huh. well, now we're going to move onto a more local issue here in new york city. of course you had the funeral of officer ramos this weekend. you had thousands of -- thousands, not hundreds, thousands of nypd officers turning their backs on mayor bill de blasio for some incendiary comments he made befo

then dr. ben carson at 8% as well.s preliminary report might do to the numbers? it's worth taking all the numbers with a grain of salt. they change rapidly. this is the time right before the 2008 presidential race. you had hillary clinton in front on the democratic side. you had rudy giuliani leading the republican field. things can change. what can i tell you when bridge gate scandal is done turned 2014 for a lost year for christie. in 2013, he won re-election resoundingly. was going to use that as a spring board to have potentially line up fundraisers, other types of people to get the christie presidential bandwagon going. 2014 didn't turn into that. not saying how he might not be a play for he decides to run but 2014 turned out to be a tough year for him. at least in the presidential sweep stakes. there's more to be seen. we'll see what the other investigations on this bridge gait turns out. >> the presidential sweep take stakes. thank you. >>> let's turn to a story we covered when it made headlines. rolling stone's

i interviewed dr. ben thinking of running for the republican presidential nomination, he's a famed pediatric neurosurgeon from johns hopkins university, we spoke about what's going on in ferguson, missouri, before the grand jury decision in staten island, but listen to what he said about police in america. >> i challenge people all the time, imagine living for 24 hours with no police. people will be walking into your house saying, hey, i think i like that television, i'm it taking that. it would be total chaos. so the police are our friends. are they perfect in all cases? of course not. >> you want to react to that, debbie rose? >> yes. this is not an issue of police and what they endure. this is about treatment, a different standard applied in communities of color as opposed to a standard that they use in other communities. and so with ben carson's remark, he does a disservice to this community when he tries to triv vallize how the what we know the reality is and how those services are delivered. >> is on
