dr. ben carson there. what can you tell us? >> dr. ben carson is one of the three or four speakers throughout the course of this three-day conservative political action conference who has packed the halls. it's standing-room only. there is a big draft dr. ben carson president for movement around the country. he's been coy saying he doesn't think that is a great idea and not interested in 2 running for president. he's one of the world's leading pediatric heart surgeons and very conservative and much becpac. he is not one of the 2016 presidential contenders. we had a steady stream of would-be white house candidates for 2016. it began with ted cruz, senator from texas on thursday morning. he lit it up although it was an early morning conference speech and there weren't a lot of people here. the enthusiasm was palable. chris christie had the first bit of good press in the wake of the george washington bridge scandal back in his new jersey.

dr. ben carson came up healthily in the straw poll. we played video. in the rom, what was it like? >> ben carson spoke after what most of the attendees was the 2016 republican field with rapped paul as final spoker and mr. carson is world known and now retired and very much a main stay at conservative cattle calls for presidential candidates and there are a couple of draft movements, and ben carcop is not behind this. he's not really interested in running for president. but he would not ignore the grass rots. it hasn't gotten pass the conservative base. he has a huge following. and the political establishment and professional class has listened to the doctor who is hesitant. there is a long line of contender, they are persuadable. when they profess their love for you. you flex the muscle. carl, thank you very much. >> reporter: you got. it >> we'll play out more of governor sarah palin. and the c- pack winner will join chris walls tomorrow. >> and one minute on the radar and next it vanished. the top story developing at this hour and three americans we

dr. ben carson riled up the crowd during the conference and today addressed the rumors that said he could be on the ballot. >> it's a bit surprising, but, you know, i still maintain that politics is not something that is in my bucket list. i would only do it if i felt that i had to do it. >> and certainly in 2012, there was a broad consensus the party's challenge is reaching minority, women and young voters. back to you. >>> and now helping us break it all down, cpac and more you can digital politics editor and host of you power play. so rand paul comes out on top and key lines in his speech really had to do with fourth amendment issues. that will i libertarian theme d his foreign policy, he seems to be embraced by a lot at cpac. >> he can obviously energize younger voters which is a massive concern for the republican party because they don't have a -- you can talk about demography in a lot of different ways, but the number one problem for republican voters is younger voters are skewing -- always tend to be more liberal, but that's intensifying. this is a point on which conservatives can

dr. ben carson, professor emeritus of neurosurgery at johns hopkins as well. you all for being here. i want to start the first panel and talk about what you're seeing out there, the problems now that we hear from patients and consumers. what are you seeing out there? >> well, you know, i run into obviously a lot of patients because i'm all over the country and a lot of physicians, and it seems like the biggest problem is that we have insinuated into the doctor-patient relationship a lot of things that don't need to be there. what do you need for good health care? a health care provider and a patient. well, along comes the middleman to help facilitate the relationship and now it has become the predominant entity with the patient and health care provider at its beck and call. so when you do that, you basically create a sort of different world. and, you know, when we talk about physicians, i want to talk about ways to bring the relationship back to the patient and the doctor. >> what about challenges you're seeing? real-world challenges for doctors? >> i did have

dr. ben carson. governor christie and scott caller and rick santorum rounding out the group. jackie could you in addition, welcome to you both. what have we learned overall. what's your big takeaway? >> you know, it shows that the conservative praert isn't of one mind. there are some there are some things that divide them. not everyone is on the same page. they're still working through some issues that they haven't quite resolved from 2012. >> so how much, beth, how much weight does the straw poll carry? did he deliver a message that would resonate with a national audience? >> well, i think what you're seeing there is the appeal of rand paul and ron paul, his father before him to young republicans, young conservativ s conservatives. granted cpac buses in a lot of young folks to attend every year, but his message resonates with the young republicans, the sort of noninterventionist approach the if the republican party will have a future, they probably do need to embrace more of a rand paul view of the world. granted, he's conservative on other issues, but he's the only rep show

dr. ben carson, pediatric neurosurgeon, very, very popular republican who really rose to national prominencebreakfast a couple years ago when he took on president obama very aggressively, made a spirited defense for the culture of life. he, too, a very, very warm reception coming in third place here. ben carson is not running for president. he has said he's flattered by those who are trying to draft him into the race and if there is a ground swell of american support, he would consider it. there are two or three draft efforts on his behalf that were very present here, lots of people walking around with run ben carson, run t-shirts and bumper stickers. clearly it had an effect, as was his speech effective. he did speak today. the rest of the candidates on the ballot are all done speaking last night. ben carson had the cpacers to themselves on the day of the final ballots were cast and comes in third place. that will get a lot of

dr. ben carson who has been prominent in right-wing media the past year, 9% of and chris christie got 8%.ecord of this straw poll when it comes to predicting the gop nominee isn't that good, past winners included rand paul, george allen and steve forbes, none of whom came close to the nomination. the margin of victory is impressive enough to tell us something where the conservative base is now and even if you pull the straw poll aside, cpac itself is the current passions. 11,000 people attended this year's three-day event which wrapped up when that straw poll tally was announced. the conservative attendees did a lot more than just sit around waiting for presidential contenders to speak. they were also going to argue over and hash out a policy agenda, the new strategies are formulated and the candidates who would lead them are dissected. the national harbor convention center just across from d.c. has been buzzing with conservative bloggers and radio hosts, intellectual leaders, policy, donors, those who organize phone banks, form voluntary armies every election year. so let's forget about
