dr. ben carson. good evening dr.arson, good to have you with us here tonight. >> good to be with you, judge. >> i'm going to get right to it. now, the big question now is unity in the republican party. i understand that you are somewhat of an intermediary between donald trump and some of the establishment players like paul ryan and that before donald trump between d.c. you kind of smoothed the way a little. do you want to tell us what that meant? >> well, you know, basically, i just wanted to talk about the kind of person that donald trump is and explain to speaker ryan and to a variety of other people that he's not a polished politician. and that means that he will say thing that don't fit into nice neat little packages like they are used to having. and it can be quite confusing sometimes. it resonates tremendously with the people themselves. >> what was their reaction when you said he is not a polished politician, he doesn't speak political speak? did any say "come on"? >> they actually do understand, particularly

dr. ben carson, now one of trump's most trusted advisers, has requested his own private meeting with paul ryan. jacob rascon is outside trump tower here in new york. jacob, am i to understand that dr. carson is essentially going to be gauging the room and also gauging paul ryan's mood before trump goes in? >> reporter: that's the plan, craig. you'll remember that dr. ben carson was one of the first to come out and endorse trump. he dropped out in early march and several days later threw his full weight behind the candidate saying that he had buried the hatchet and it was time for unity. dr. ben carson made it his mission to be a unifier and peacemaker on donald trump's behalf. so it's not too surprising that he would want to help out in this meeting between ryan and trump. but in fact a source close to the trump campaign confirmed that dr. ben carson did this on his own. he wasn't requested to do this by the trump campaign. and now he wants to get in there and he wants to help, as he has. on our channels, on our shows and elsewhere on other cable channels to try to be a unifier and peacem

dr. ben carson. did dr. carson emerge from the conversation upbeat that the two men, the speaker and the republican nominee would emerge hand in hand going forward towards the convention? >> you know, listen. speaker ryan is a good guy. he's a principled guy. a strong guy just like mr. trump. speaks his mind. very candid and an honest guy. so you can't take offense at the speaker being candid just like mr. trump speaks candid. you have to respect that. so what the speaker was saying is this. we've got a down ticket. there are people who are nervous about the kinds of things mr. trump has said in the past. can we be assured? they want a president to be willing to negotiate and who understands what their goals and their policies are. that's reasonable. >> the bottom line is last week, the speaker told cnn's jake tapper he was not ready to endorse donald trump meeting, d him being ready? >> no, i don't think so. it shouldn't happen. >> why? >> it's a process. they're meeting. men are meeting. both with critical
