dr. brooks: nobody knows. the truth of the matter is these populist uprisings in american politics don't happen that often. we don't have a lot of data. it really depends on the reaction conservatives have. that republicans have. we know that populism will largely evaporate in the next few years, depending on what happens in the bottom 80% of the economy. if we see more even growth going forward, paradoxically, even if donald trump that the popularity of populism would evaporate. at which time, we would see the popularity of conventional republicanism, or what is left of the conservative movement, so we don't know. it depends on the aspirational leadership the republican start showing today. that is what will be left after populism goes away. susan: is donald trump a conservative? dr. brooks: that depends on what you call a conservative. most conservatives who have held that title, the buckley-ite conservatives would probably say that he isn't, but my guess is that donald trump would not be bothered by that. h

dr. patel, a physician with johns hopkins and also served in the obama white house helping to shape the affordable care and foel fellow at the brookings institute. obamacare needs to be updated and fixed. nothing is perfect. when you look at the first draft of trump care, what's your first impression? >> it's -- my first impression is this is even worse than the house drafted bill. >> tell us more about why you say that. >> so, ali, you did a nice job talking about the losers. i'll tell you states are big losers in this. so we've talked about how the house bill really radically changes the medicaid program. this takes it to another level where it ratchets down any expansions in medicaid but also changes the medicaid program to that block grantor per capita cap program and it adjusts the inflation to something very wonky called the consumer price index, which doesn't even keep up with the pace of medical inflation. so it's way less money than even projected for states under the house bill, if you can believe it and so states are really like huge losers in this. >> much like misconceptions around planned parenthood that ali mentioned be
