[applause] [applause] >> thank you. thank you, governor for your kind introduction, and also inviting me to speak with you and your fellow governors. it's a great privilege and joy to join you in governor herbert's beautiful home state. i was here a couple of months ago and had the privilege of hearing the governor speak about astonishing advances the state has made in becoming a startup state for the nation. congratulations, and thank you for hosting this meeting. now in seeking a solution to america's current economic quandary, it is, i would say, almost impossible to think of any group closer to the action than you, the nation's governors. you carry an extraordinary burden of lead

dr. carlton brown, president of another uncf member institute, clark, atlanta, university, and a distinguished educator. but today i'm going to talk about humor. something african-american college presidents don't get to talk about enough. surveying the cone -- cornucopia of african-american literature, we can only join in marveling at the curious thing to make a poet black and bid him, her seam. and yet a look back at the history of african-american literacy and education dictates a mixed verdict. we have come far in this century and a half since the civil war and emancipation. but we have still a long way to go on our educational and literacy journey. we have within our community a thriving cohort of well educated and highly literal men and women. but we have an enormous population of brothers and sisters who have been passed by, who have been denied the education they need and deserve, and because they have been passed by, face uncertain and insecure prospects. yet even more hinges on education than the futures of individual men and women. it is the future of a community, the future of harl

[applause] >> well, what else can i say? i have to tell you also, though i spent most of my -- much of my time on the west coast, i end up walking through the mit campus and i love the excitement on the campus. it turns beyond to what is possible in america. i am interested in this issue of innovation and the changing game. it has changed a bit. it is worth the time to spend looking at methods and taking us beyond the issues of just money. the first question you might ask is, what is changing? what does it mean for higher education and innovation? one chart has given a lot over the years. we call it the big shot. in the last few years, change has happened in terms of the long-term stability, brief moments of disturbance, changes in 60 years of stability. we reinvented work practices and other practices. what has happened now is in the last 10 years, we are moving to a different kind of infrastructure proven by the digital loss of competition. now we find having a world in which we hav
