dr. yellen was born in brooklyn and attended high school in bay ridge. that's an -- [ laughter and applause ] i said to her jokingly that that would be an applause line. she earned a bachelor's degree from brown and received her ph.d. from yale. after spending her early career in academia, she served on the white house counsel of economic advisers from 1997 to 1999, and in 2004 became president and ceo for the federal reserve bank of san francisco. she was selected to serve as vice chair of the federal reserve board of governors in 2010 and in 2014 became the first woman to serve as its chair. [ applause ] that's a position that she held until february of this year, as some of you may have read in the newspaper.
