dr. carson is not alone. done a tremendous amount of work at liberty education forum which i head up debunking myth that being gay is a choice. apparently there's still a lot more work that we need to do and work that advocates need to do not just to educate dr. carson who clearly needs to be updated with the medical science on the issue of sexual orientation but with those people around the country who are still stuck in the stone age and think that being gay is something that is a choice. >> do you feel that someone who holds those opinions should be the nominee of your party? could you support that person if he was the nominee of your party? >> i've seen a tremendous backlash not just from people in the general electorate over the last several hours since dr. carson made his ridiculous comments but people within the republican party, some conservatives and people who i consider to be friends and allies myself that look at me and are just shaking their head about this. comments like the ones dr. carson said

dr. ben carson or you? >> ha!ne of the things we do in addition to making the conservative case is gay conservatives, like obamacare repeal and lower taxes, et cetera. and bad actors like dr. carson today, it's absolutely out of touch on cultural issues. >> this is not the first time he's said anything along these lines. and it's not going to be the last. there's a certain group of the presidential candidates who are running for a certain segment of that base. it is a social conservative base. whether it's michele bachman, it's not the mainstream of america anymore. >> who does believe the orientation, or identity is a matter of choice? >> social conservatives. i don't have the statistics in front of me, but there are a small percentage of people who believe that. i don't personally believe that. i think he's appealing to a group of people that will be able to help him in places like iowa marginally. and he'll continue to be on the debate stage by the rating in the polls. >> i think you give ben carson too much cr

dr. carson sort of. know look i don't think -- this september to me a practical issue of you know let's parse every gay person every straight person in america and when was their sexual identity formed? was it in utero, kindergarten it was in college? is orange the new black and prisons are the new women's colleges? i'm a little confused there. to me that's not the issue. the issue is what should be in the future and in my case and in my vision for the future high pressure all our vision of the future if it is fully morally socially culturally and politically equal, 1,000% equal to be gay, then by then by conclusion it should be 1,000% perfectly fine to choose to be gay whether or not an individual chooses to or not. i don't, however, think that's exactly the argument that dr. carson was intending to make. >> he brought up the prison thing, and, mark i think your point is right on. it's that just because you may have a sexual experience or a sexual encounter with someone of the same sex that does not mak

dr. carson? to give the speech that matters. dr. carson: there are a couple of things that would say about that. number one is that it was kind of an accident that it was delivered at the memorial. it was aimed at congress, they wanted to go to the steps of the capitol and every protest letter. but they did not want that there. mr. matthews: they did not wonder that the white house. mr. carson: when you look at the mall, what is the farthest place from the capital? [laughter] of course we're sending them there. they felt that this was a punishment and it turned out to be this wonderful decision because everyone then have that symbolic importance of king, when he is delivering his speech and frames his speech this way he had lincoln on his mind the whole time he is preparing his remarks. he mentioned five score years ago, lincoln delivered his great speech. he mentions the emancipation proclamation 100 years before the march on washington. he has lincoln on his mind as he prepares the speech. he was given five-seven minutes to give a

dr. carson chris christie and rubio, 9% and 7%.ll pretty tight right now and still 10 11 months to go before the actual balloting takes place. >> exactly. and what polls this early are about is really name recognition. jeb bush obviously the bush name very well known. the person that i would think who would look at these polls and have a little bit of worry right now is chris christie. chris christie has had some problems. he's got to try and get donors together. he's in single digits in the polls, and if you look at the internals of our poll wolf you'll see that he's under water on his favorable and unfavorable ratings. he's got a 25% favorable rating and a 44% unfavorable rating and he's only at 7% in the polls. this was somebody who everybody assumed would be in the top tier of republican candidates and if you look at chris christie right now he is not. >> yeah. a lot of these candidates most americans haven't even heard of them. take a look. we asked are you unsure about, heard about, dr. carson 64% don't know much about them.

dr. carson. they selected you, sir, to edit the papers of dr. martin luther king.ht. >> well, i think that in some ways, there is a parallel with lincoln in the sense that lincoln believed that the second inaugural was the better speech than the gettysburg address. the world has told king that the better speech was the i have a dream speech, but arguably, i think the speech he gave in memphis was a -- a better speech. it was a fuller speech. it was a more coherent speech and i think what he was trying to do with some of the meaning of his life. he had reached the point where he was ready for death, but he had always been ready for that. i think what he was having to decide was that he was not going to accomplish his great goals in life. some people, most of you perhaps, think of him every -- of him as a civil rights leader. he did not think of himself that way. he was a minister who got recruited into the civil rights movement by rosa parks. and she is the one who made him into a civil rights leader. and he did that fairly well, i think all of us would agree, for a
