>> number three is don't forget the muscles. a lot of people think the skin care is just skin, but we have muscles. the use of the face is connected to the muscles. you can get a series of treatments from a licensed professional. this treatment is complicated. you really cannot do it at home. a professional needs to do -- >> am i going to get a demo? >> and number eight is if you have done the other steps and you want to perfect the skin you can use an exfoliant. it doesn't have anything fancy. >> it all goes back to number one which is nutrition. >> thank you, marco. that was incredible. now we know why we have good skin or why we don't have good skin. the more of those you do, the better your skin is going to be. thank you, marco. >>> thought when you didn't see msg in your label it would be wiped from your diet? up next, we tell you the truth. >>> welcome back to" a healthy you." it is a neuro toxin that can give you headaches headaches and aggravate migraines and cause allergies and learning disabilities. you would think you wouldn't find it in foods, especially health foods. when i dug a little deeper i found a whole other story. with me to discuss the crime of miss labeling foods is adrian samuels who along with her husband, jack found the truth in labeling campaign. hi, thank you for being with us today. >> thank you, carol. it is a real pleasure to be able to give this information to your audience. >> why don't we start with what msg is? it is a neuro toxin? >> a neuro toxin is a substance that will stimulate brain cells to the point of killing them. it is repeated powerful stimulation and when applied enough to receptors the cells, the neurons die. >> these toxins kill cells and while they are doing that they cause headaches and they cause migraines and long-term use of these things can cause learning disabilities. it is a precursor -- it stimulates the brain and it can cause lou gehrig's disease. the list goes on and on. why is this in food? >> it is in food because the industry that sells it makes a lot of money from the pluct. product. the mono sodium glutimate is full of msg. it is very effective. if you have a product that has some msg in it and i don't, your product will be more flavorful than mine. >> that's why it is available to these p cs. and they have gone to great lengths to hide that. they hide the fact that there is msg in foods. i found msg hidden among many different labels, many different titles. can you give us some of the things that they use to hide msg? some of the labels they hide msg and the labels they use? >> particularly potent are the hydrolised protein. corn protein, whey protein. there is yeast and yeast extract and sodium casonate and things that have small amounts of msg in them would include citric acid. i am not giving you things in terms of the amount of msg because it varies trough tremendously from product to product and varies on the type of manufacture. you will get powdered milk. when milk and the protein in milk changes to powder there is some acid released or produced and it is that free glutamic acid that is causing the reactions that we see, the various reactions. we need clarification because there is glutimade in the body. it is very functional a and you need it. there is no question about it. when it is manufactured and when it is not found in protein and when it is taken from the protein or manufactured through the process using bacteria that actually manufactures the glutamic acid, that is when it has this toxic potential. protein doesn't have a problem. >> i was disappointed. i shop at stores at what they consider health foods and i bought a boullon. i thought there is no way my health food has it. msg stopped being on labels years ago because it went underground. it is still there and a neuro toxin. i thought in health foods it can't be there because why would they call it a health feud with a neuro toxin. sure enough i had to throw out five cases because they had it in there -- i think it was a textured protein. i was so upset and disappointed not only for the waste of money, but i don't have my boullon anymore. we live with these foods every day and they have these horrible things in them that are hidden on the labels. >> there may be one other thing that you would be interested in knowing. organic food can contain ingredients that contain msg. there is a prohibition in organic food against mono sodium glutimade. it is not allowed in organic food. but if autolised yeast is used with ingredients thehydrolosis will glutamic acid. the fact that you are using organic food is not something that will keep you free from msg. >> so basically it is best to stay away from processed foods stay away from processed foods and ea cooking your own foods at home, don't you think? >> absolutely. the only way to really avoid msg in all of its man fess stations is to avoid the processed food. >> thank you so much for visiting with us. i appreciate all of your information. good luck to you and jack and continue to tell people how to read labels and stay away from some of these terrible things we should not be eating. thank you again. >> certainly. >>> is there a different in supplements? is there one that is better than another? the answer in ask carol. that's next. >>> welcome back. today's ask carol question comes from emily. she asks "i just want to know your opinion on raw, vegetable supplements." hi, emily. i personally whole -- wholeheartedly 100% recommend them over regular supplements. i also like green powders and of course green bars. the big thing with supplements and i mean any kind of supplement is you need to really trust the company that makes them. these days i don't find labeling laws strict enough, not for my taste. what i mean by that is any ingride gent in a is up plaw -- ingredient that is less than 3% of the supplement does not have to be listed on the label. that blows my mind. that means anything at all can be in there as long as it is less than 3%. my mind goes wild with the possibilities. you have to know the company. you have to trust the company that makes the supplements and read the labels and call them if you have questions or if you are not trusting them. remember, it is your health. it is your responsibility. don't forget, if you have a question you would like answered, tweet me or facebook me at the addresses below. you can find more information on today's show at my website, carolalt.com. that's it for today. enjoy your week. i hope you are learning to be more of a healthy you. >>> how are you feeling this morning? dr deborah horwitz a veterinary behaviorist and author of the book decoding your dog the ultimate experts explain common dog behaviors and reveal how to prevent or change your unwanted one dr horowitz welcome. thank you for having me thanks for joining us why is understanding animal behavior so complex. that really that complex one of the problems that we have is we look at the world from our point of view and we don't necessarily know what the other point of view is of the dog i'm less we study them which i do and my colleagues from the american college of in their behaviors do as well i am the editor one of the editors of the book decoding your dog and all the chapters have been written. by my colleagues who are specialists in animal behavior and we spend the entire book helping you understand exactly what your dog is telling you when they do things when they bark at you when they're destructive when you go away i'm curious your thoughts on popular dog training techniques from the the monks of new skete you know of flipping the dog on his back and establishing dominance all that kind of thing to creating some of these sort of fads that are out and around. well we know a lot about dog behavior now that is very important to get out there for the public to understand first of all that theory that dogs are like wolves and that you need to be alpha and be stronger and flip them on their back is actually outdated and not really true that came from information that was taken from watching captive walls that fog a lot with each other over resources and food but there are people went and watched wolves that lived in the wild in the natural environment they actually acted like a family there was a mother wolf and a father wolf and they were very cooperative so if that alpha stuff doesn't apply to rules then it certainly does look like a dog more than anything all our dogs want us to do is be clear about what we expect of them and if you think about what we expect you when you want to learn something new is it the character does it all the care it usually works best and that's true in changing your dog behavior as well what are the most commonly mis understood cues that dogs are trying to send us. i think one of the most misunderstood cues is people not knowing when dogs are anxious or afraid and so when dogs are anxious or afraid they really have limited ways of let us know and they let us know what they're faced with their eyes with their body and their tail and they may. they do things like growl or dust or turn their head away or tuck their tail and if that dog in that picture that you have a there they're showing us that maybe i'm not sure about what you're saying to me i'm not sure what you're going to do when i'm a little bit frightened and anxious and when we see that we really need to step back and realize well maybe i'm just not being clear that dog right now is really happy he looks pretty good you know so how should we respond when one we're getting the feedback from our dog he or she is anxious or afraid the first thing to do is to look at the situation from your dog's point of view for example many people like to take their dogs to the dog park but when they get there their dog barks and lunges at everybody and maybe they don't want to go to the dog park maybe they're not being unfriendly but rather they're saying you know this rotating cast of characters here in the job is too much for me i like to play with one dog at a time so it's like we might like to go out to lunch with one or two friends but we don't necessarily want them to bring a lot six or seven people that we've never met. if our god is i'm willing to enter the house with a bunch of new people they've never met before then we might get to understand that our dog isn't comfortable being in crowds of people that they don't know just like us they're individuals it doesn't mean we can't teach them how to be comfortable at the dog park or group of people they haven't met but we have to understand that we need to take time and explain to them how we want them to behave what the consequences are and most importantly that they're safe we've got their back and we're not going to hurt fascinating stuff dr dr deborah horwitz thanks so much for joining us you're welcome thanks for having me now everything you know about man's best friend is right. thank you. crazy alert a high road conspiracy back in two thousand and one clever and boehner with an ironic sense of humor started selling stewart cold bare eight t. shirts why the joke was obvious but funny jon stewart would probably do a better job running the country than many of the mainstream political candidates stewart didn't run but that's not stopping some people from thinking that he still has political ambitions a well known and gyptian author has accused him of plotting to overthrow the egyptian government seriously allegations relate back to stewart's appearance gyptian comedian. talk show earlier this year during that appearance stewart made a joke about wandering in the deserts in egypt. you left to program i mean some of it is what i mean john
