george came down here in 1888 with his mother while she was being treated by a doctor here. dr. tle. george explored. he was quite taken with a lot of what he saw here. and shortly after that, he began buying up individual parcels. and, after he had accumulated around 2000 or so acres, this is from frederick olmsted's letters. . olmsted is a big part of my book just a fascinating individual. he wanted old instead -- olmsted to take a look at where he was making a building's country house. that's how it all kind of got started from there, it became a very big country house. but he quite taken with the area and the decisive trip was the 1888 trip he made down here with his mother. once olmsted said, you have not made a horrible mistake. the woods are a disaster here. you're going to have to do a lot of rehabilitation. quite familiars with not just asheville but beyond. he had traveled here essentially in the role of a journalist in many ways and had written about his travels. he knew the potential of this area from a biological standpoint, and from a botanical standpoint. then they
