dr. goldstein is here to explain. thank you for being here. >> yeah. >> and what does it mean to have heart failure and what are the symptoms? >> it's the clinical syndrome in which either heart-pumping function is impaired, weak, or the relaxation component of the heart is impaired and patients often present most commonly with shortness of breath. >> and so, in fact, heart failure is the leading cause of hospitalization in the country. how is it usually treated? approached with a multipronged treatment regimen. we want to make patients feel better. pharmaco logically, we threat them with drugs that can accomplish that and improve heart function. we want to prevent death, of course, which can be accomplished with a variety of medical devices like defibrillators and we want to minimize their episodes of exacerbation and treat the underlying causes like coronary disease and hypertensive heart disease. >> what new technology is available to improve the quality of life for patients and reduce admissions to the hospital? >
