dr. gormley believes yardley love might have also been smothered. reporting live from charlottesville i'm julie carey, news 4. >> thank you. >>> jurors in the huguely murder trial have seen photographs, video statements, and other evidence but reporters and others in the courtroom audience can only listen to the descriptions provided by witnesses. that's because unlike most other courtrooms the jury sits facing the audience. the tv faces them. so others in the courtroom can only see the back of the monitor. today some members of the media asked the judge to turn the monitor around so evidence can be seen by everyone in attendance but the judge ruled against that request. >> there was a scare today at a d.c. apartment building after a call for a possible gas leak turned into something a lot more serious. it happened this afternoon in the 2600 block of wade road in southeast. a lot of residents were treated for carbon monoxide poisoning. everyone is wondering when they'll be allowed to go back home. pat collins is live at the scene. pat? >> reporter:

dr. gormley the effect is for the heart to slow or stop. apman, could that type of injury lead to death? gormley, it could reflect pressure that could have led to death. love's head injuries were also significant. she had a bruised eye, mouth abrasions, cuts inside her mouth, and a bruised tongue. when asked what could have caused that gormley replied, the injury to the face particularly the mouth could be consistent with smothering. gormley also testified love suffered a blow to the right side of the head that created another potentially fatal hemorrhage but defense attorneys challenged gormley's conclusions pointing out there were no injuries to the left side of love's head. love's autopsy is key to the prosecution's case that an angry and drunken george huguely broke into her apartment on may 3rd, 2010, beat her, and left her dying on her bed. earlier today box after box of physical evidence gathered in the case was emptied and presented to the jury. among the items, photos of injuries to george huguely's body. pictures taken shortly afte

dr. william gormley testified the cause of death was clear, blunt force trauma. grim autopsy photographs were shown to the jury to support his case. our paul wagner is in charlottesville covering the trial. we asked him this evening about gormley's testimony. you had some interesting findings. he's a key witness, is he. , for the prosecution? >> two things he said today that was interesting is that one, there's evidence that she -- there was an attempt to smother her and that's where the injuries came to her face, although she didn't ultimately die of asphyxia. the other interesting aspect that came out is the medical examiner says there was no injury to her nose. george huguely has said consistently that the only injury to yeardley love when he left her apartment that night was that she had a bloody nose >> reporter: there's a big fight going on about what kind of evidence the media will be allowed to see. what's going to come of that? don't we have a right to see that evidence, the video tapes, the pictures that the jury is seeing? >> reporter: i've never exper

dr. william gormley, his findings backed up by separate evaluations by two brain experts. gormley said the trauma led to cardiac arrythmia. also revealed were toxicology results on love. the defense had requested a special test for amphetamines because love had a prescription for adderall. but he testified the level was therapeut therapeutic. as for love's blood alcohol level of 0.14, gormley testified, it's certainly not consistent with causing death. george huguely's attorneys didn't question gormley, but his conclusions contradict the defense theory that an intoxicated love facing facedown on her pillow died of asphyxia. prosecutors say it baz a drunk and angry hughley who killed love, first kick being in her door, shaking her and hitting her head against the wall. earlier in the wall, jurors got a lesson on brain injury as two pathologists were questioned who added reports to the autopsy. christine fuller used a model of a skull and brain to describe the contusions and hemorrhages she found in love's brain. fuller says they were the type of injuries created by shearing
