so it's a complex target. >> larry: where in this picture, dr. gupta is brain cancer? >> well, i think brain cancer is probably at the other end of the spectrum that was just being discussed in terms of making an impact overall. as a neurosurgeon, i think over the last few decades we have not made the sort of progress, with one of the deadliest forms of breast cancer, something known as leoblast tome ma. this is one of those tumors that when you get the diagnosis, often times it comes accompanied with the average survival is around 14 months. so with some types of brain cancers, we have done better. with this type of cancer, for the reasons that were just mentioned, that it's so complicated, it's not just one cancer, there are so many different types of cancer literally within a tumor and they're all smart, they're all wiley, they all evade treatment. that's what makes it so difficult to treat. >> larry: we'll be back with more, don't go away. k vegetables only when they're perfect. then freeze them fast so they're are as nutritious as fresh. dr. sanjay gupta calling us from atlanta at the university hospital. can ja sanjay, can you hear us?thanks for joining us. what can you tell us about ambassador holbrooke's medical condition? >> reporter: this is a condition of the large blood vessel that leads away from the heart. it's different from having heart surgery, for example, people think of when someone has chest pain, this is typically caused by a blockage of one of the blood vessels in the heart. this is something different. this is an aortac section or tear. the blood sort of gets into the wall of the aorta, itself, as opposed to going and giving blood to the rest of the body. what i heard is that he had chest pain but was able to walk out of the office during his meeting and started to have significant trouble after that. that's typically as a result of the blood that's supposed to be giving oxygen to the rest of the body. simply not being able to do that anymore. and then the operation that you heard about 20, 21 hours friday and into the morning on saturday is basically to find that area of the blood vessel that is d

dr. sanjay gupta joins us from atlanta. it was a big part of the legislation.ut into action yet? >> some parts have been put into action. much of it scheduled to roll out in 2014 and an important point. as far as how much this is still sustainable after this, if this is upheld, its serious blow overall to the affordable care act. the best thing to think about this, it was sort of crafted as a bargain, if you will, between congress and insurance companies. en shurns companies said, okay, we won't charge higher premiums to people with preexisting conditions and offer them insurance, keep kids or young adults on the parent's insurance plans until the age of 26, provisions like that. the deal was, though, that people who could afford to buy health care insurance and didn't have it would have to buy it. mandate. that's what's at play here and specifically it is not the mandate but the idea of actually penalizing someone or taxing someone extra because they don't have insurance. that was a specific part of what judge hudson here in virginia really took issue with. on

dr. sanjay gupta following this story since july. what are we supposed to make of the fda finding?2008 in some ways when the whole process started to fast track the medication. i can tell you what's happening now will come as a disappointment to some women counting on this as a therapy and sometimes last resort therapy if the breast cancer had spread. what's happened here? they looked at four big studies, the fda did to come to conclusions. trying to answer two questions. first is does this medication prolong survival? and number two, do the benefits outweight the risks? the answer to both of those questions came back no at least according to the fda. the risk they're talking about here are significant ones. potential heart failure, heart attacks, potential development of perforations or holes in your intestines or stomach. significant risks for women with breast cancer that spread. again, back there was a lot of interest and enthusiasm around the medication in 2008 so that the fda fast tracked it after the company provided data showing, look, it is going to lead to progression-fre
