dr. sanjay gupta live in kathmandu.a very brief talk with the president of nepal. he hasn't made any other official statement yet. what did he say? >> well you know i got a chance to basically ask him what you know if anything nepal was able to take care of all the injured. as you mentioned he hasn't spoken to the media as of yet. he's a doctor himself, interestingly. and he said basically that this is a calamity. it's a tragedy the likes of which he had not seen and that it was difficult to take care of all these patients so he welcomed international assistance and was thankful for it. that was basically what he said. he was surrounded by many many military personnel, personal security they moved him along quickly. i think he's trying to get an idea as much as he can, being out here of exactly how much kathmandu has suffered alisyn. >> sanjay just even in the short time we've been on the air the death toll has climbed. was he able to give you any sense of the numbers of the death toll or even of the missing at this hou

dr. sanjay gupta joins me now from atlanta. hi sanjay.e no studies that show that marijuana is effective in dealing with depression and suicidal thoughts? >> part of the reason we showed that and introduced you to that veteran is because that's the state of affairs right now. people are given all these medications. many of them don't work. he was suicidal overdosed on the mainstream medications and turned to this as a last resort. the position he's in is it's trial and error for him. he has to try different things and figure out what's going to work and what doses are. we know more about the fact that as an adult that the concern is not so much the impact on the brain. there is a concern about impact on adolescent brain but just how well does it work and how do you maximize its -- that ethicacy. we just don't know that yet. that's what they're trying to do is get this topic and this medicine studied. >> so is any research on that aspect of marijuana under way? >> that's one of the exciting things about this new documentary. the science re

dr. sanjay gupta is in kathmandu.surgical skills to this medical crisis and joins me now by phone. tell us more, sanjay. >> it's as you described it. you have a tremendous demand for care. in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake obviously high demand. there was a lull after that. the doctors, nurse, the administrators at these hospitals thought maybe the worst was over at this point. what we now know is the rescue missions ongoing in some of the more remote areas were going to bring patients back. over the day-to-day you had a dramatic increase in patients care again and demand that goes with that in terms of personnel and resources. all of that. it supplies like gloves and latex gloves and scrubs for surgeons to do operations but also infrastructure. generators that make these hospitals work are gasoline powered so they are trying to be judicious about the use of those generators. that's the picture. they don't know what comes next. do numbers go up? is there a lull again? there's a lot of unknowns, carol. >> i

dr. sanjay gupta. i'd heard about those interviews there on capitol hill with senators booker and gillibrand. you have that as part of this. then you have you causing a bit of a stir here with your cnn opinion piece saying yes, indeed, we should be legalizing medical marijuana. how did you get there? >> well i think it's a medicine brooke. i think it's something that can help people. i think it's a medicine that not only works, but it often works when nothing else has. i think there are people who have suffered needlessly because of the concerns about abuse, but in the crosshair, people have just been denied a very viable option for them to alleviate their pain and suffering. it's easy to do nothing, as i wrote in that op-ed. it's easy to play it safe on this issue. once you two outgo out and look at the data much of it from countries outside the united states and you meet the patients it changed my mind. i think it's something that needs to be available to everybody. >> i know there has been such a de

dr. sanjay gupta, cnn, kathmandu, nepal. >> an 18-year-old has been pulled alive from the rubble. a short time ago. so miracles certainly are happening. now to baltimore where a city-wide sur to curfew is in e. large crowds marched in the streets monday. they protested with little or no violence. the police commissioner says officers made 18 arrests far fewer than monday night when there was a riot and 235 people were arrested. the protests spread throughout the u.s. including new york, washington and boston. hundreds marched down the streets in solidarity for those in baltimore. cnn political commentator marc lamont hill joins us from los angeles now to talk about this. marc, police in baltimore, will apparently wrap up their freddie gray investigation on friday. not releasing details to the public, rather allowing it to, take its course in the courts. but do you think the baltimore demonstrations will still be able to carry momentum into the weekend into next week despite not getting some important answers as to what happened to freddie gray while he was in custody? >> will i ce

dr. sanjay gupta is joining us live from kathmandu. he's just back from a tent city where reporters have not been before. sanjay, this is devastating. thank you so much for being there. tell us what you've seen? >> i'll tell you we were inside one of the busiest hospitals in the city center called bear hospital a hospital the takes care of some of the most urgent trm ma cases in the city. even for them this is a situation that they had not encountered before even though they take care of a lot of trauma patients yesterday or twos days ago now, right immediately after the earthquake they were quite busy as expected. there was a little bit of a lull afterwards they told me but what happened is that was probably during the time that the rescue missions were taking place and they basically got a deluge of patients again today that was quite remarkable even while we were few minutes after we arrived, ambulances taxis, people walking in being carried in. it was extraordinary, wolf. most of the injuries crush injuries brain injuries spine inj

dr. sanjay gupta. sanjay, the co-pilot was prescribed what has been called and i quote heavy depressive medicine that had been very heavy on the body. what types of effect would these kinds of medicines have? >> well, when you talk about medications that are treating depression, sometimes they can make someone sleepy. they can be sedating but also have nearly the opposite effect, wolf. somebody who's very depressed, they are given a powerful antidepressant. sometimes, if they are bipolar, for example, it can sort of make them become more the sort of manic side of things. there are so many details about this whole story that are still unclear and frankly, the pieces coming in still don't make sense in aggregate. you feel there's pieces missing but a heavy antidepressant would have one of those effects, wolf. >> possibly could have been under the influence of this medication when he actually crashed the plane? >> it's possible, but again, you know, when you hear some of the interactions, it doesn't sound

dr. sanjay gupta is back with his latest investigation into pot.tion, o too, this time. and he says journalists shouldn't take a position. it makes sense, objectivity is king. but at some point, open questions do get answered. at some point contentious issues do get resolved. at some point common sense preva prevails. so, here it is. we should legalize medical marijuana. sanjay joins me now. all right, sanjay. so, here's your platform. explain your position. >> well, when something is a scheduled one substance in this country where marijuana is right now, essentially deeming it illegal saying it is the drug of highest abuse in this country and no accepted medical benefit. that just is not the way marijuana should be treated. be rescheduling it, making it legal, making it scheduled to substance, you're essentially acknowledging what i think everyone already knows. it does have some accepted medicinal use. how far, widespread, how much impact those medicinal uses will be. that's why some of the studies are being done. but to basically say it should b

dr. sanjay gupta, cnn chief medical correspondent.g the types of injuries? >> reporter: well there's obviously a critical period happening right now, fred. people who can still be saved, people who can still be rescued. we're outside of this 72-hour period. the rescuers here know the likelihood of survival goes down after there. but there are still these rays of hope as you mentioned. and being here walking around some of these devastated villages you start to understand these people's stories, what their lives were like. take a look. we know the official death toll here in nepal went up by at least one today. neighbors watch from nearby windows, still clinging to hope. after all, this 4-month-old baby was rescued after more than 22 hours under the rubble alive with no apparent injuries. this man was buried for roughly 80 hours. rescue workers administered oxygen and an iv drip while they spent ten hours digging him out. there is hope everywhere you look and there are reminders of the people who once lived and breathed in this tiny vi

dr. sanjay gupta thank you so much. the hospital scramble to save the living rescuers are finding new signs of life amid the rubble. the work is gruelling, painstaking and often heartbreaking. earlier on cnn international we heard from one trekking guide who joined the rescue effort in kathmandu. >> this is one of the main squares, the palace squares in kathmandu which attracts a lot of tourists. these are all very old structures hundreds of years old, and it's completely gone down. but initial efforts they brought in the excavator to dig out as many bodies today we've been digging with our hands and trying to find out more survivors. behind that temple over there is another very famous structure, which is completely down. there are suspicions that there are people underneath. we've been trying to get them to cry for help and we've been digging along trying to rescue them out. >> have you come across -- have you found any survivors? >> well today itself they pulled out at least two or three bodies from towards my left.

dr. sanjay gupta joins us by phone. is aspartame dangerous?it's been around a long time and there's been studies on this and impact on human health the big question people ask is does it cause cancer. there's no evidence that it causes cancer. there's been a concern recently about artificial sweeteners in general. two things. one, they may not actually help you lose weight as much as people think and in fact there are a couple studies that show that people who drink diet drinks regularly versus other drinks actually had no benefit in terms of weight loss. and the other thing is more of the impact on the body. people who drink a lot of these type of diet artificially sweetening drinks tend to still crave sugar. there's a possibility they need sugar because they're not getting it from diet sodas. in terms of overall health impact there really hasn't been evidence that shows that aspartame causes an impact on human health. >> it's replacing aspartame with another artificial sweetener. do you know what that is? >> it's a combination of chemicals.

dr. sanjay gupta, and that's something you never thought you'd see, right, marijuana at a hospital.stunning stuff. how important is this study? >> first of all, you're right. we saw this in juerusalem where they've it been using cannibis in hospital for a while. and 80% of pain medications are consumed in this country. and now over dosed from those medications is the number one cause of preventible death. and the idea that marijuana, cannibis could be used as pain relief studied in an academic hospital so you know how to dose it and all those things and we cannot find a case where someone died from an over dose. >> and you said there's this lack of research in this field. how far has it come? >> you know, i think there's a sort of revolution happening. i've been writing about this for some time and there's been more federally approved studies in the past 12 months than the past 12 years. most of the studies approved in the past were designed to look at harm very few designed to look at benefit. i think you're seeing a change. many mainstream scientists who wouldn't have dipped a toe
