dr. sanjay gupta. you heard what jeff just said, her camp wants her to be fully ready for the debate two weeks from now. but she's conducting this teleconference from bed in her chappaqua home. is that the best avenue to take? >> i don't know if she will be in bed while doing this teleconference. i think the idea that she's not going to travel. this notion that she was told to get rest and sort of recover because she has this diagnosis of pneumonia, that advice was given on friday as we all know now. we didn't hear about it until yesterday. but i think the idea of flying across the country won't necessarily make the pneumonia worse but could make the symptoms worse. obviously that's what i think they are trying to avoid for her health and for her going forward. >> how serious is this? does pneumonia affect things like your mental capacity -- >> i don't think pneumonia would affect mental capacity. i do want to point out, as much as we now know, we still don't know a lot. we don't know, for example, wha

dr. sanjay gupta with me who has looked at the letter, nice to see you again. >> you, too. >> you lookedt the letter from trump's doctor, what does it say? >> it's a single-page summary. we've read a lot of health sum reis, this is another one from dr. bornstein looking at the medical records, part of the physical exams he did and summarizing test results. there's no red flags. if anyone is looking for red flags, there's nothing. mehmet oz is a heart surgeon as you know so he was zeroing in on the heart stuff and donald trump has had a lot of different heart tests. he's had an echocardiogram, e ekgs, he's got very mild heart disease, he takes a statin, cholesterol-lowering drug but there was nothing in particular that jumped out. you heard the clip you just played he's right on the borderline between overweight and obese and he wants to lose weight. not an uncommon predicament for a lot of people so those are the big things that came out. his cholesterol numbers and all that look good. he's on the medication to lower his numbers but everything was about normal for his age. >> listen, the

dr. sanjay gupta.y sat down and looked at over a stack of a thousand pages of medical records and were able to write about it because of his particular circumstance. in this case, we have two candidates two are older. donald trump is 70. hillary clinton has a complicated medical history. and i think that given that case, we ought to know more. and i think that, you know, we fell down on the job, i would argue now looking back on it with barack obama, who was young and vigorous when he ran, we didn't know much about his health either. and mitt romney, 65 years old, you know the picture of health, we didn't know much beyond a doctor's letter either. i think that we should know more. >> do you think we will know more later, this week when hillary clinton's medical report comes out, be it will detailed specific with a lot more information, will we know a lot more about his health when he releases the results of his physical? >> we'll know more than we know today, that's for sure. i don't know how much more

dr. sanjay gupta with me, cnn's chief medical correspondent who was in brazil covering zika.ked about the people who have tested positive for zika in miami beach but now the mosquitos. >> yeah. right. so we had pretty good evidence, as i think you are pointing out, brooke, that these mosquitos were already present and they were already carrying the zika virus. the way they put that together again, as you know, is that they found people who had the zika infection who had not traveled, hadn't been with anybody who had traveled and spread it to them. so they at that point made the assumption that this was being spread locally by mosquitos. now we know -- now we have the definitive proof of that. so this in some ways was not at all surprising, but it is a stark reminder again that we now have these mosquitos in the united states. they've found them, they have identified them and they are carrying the zika virus, something that is relatively new to this part of the world. >> we are on the eve of a long labor day weekend. i have a feeling some people are hopping on planes to miami.

dr. sanjay gupta with us. he's a cnn chief medical correspondent covering zika for a while now.talking about people with zika in miami, but now we are talking mosquitos. >> yeah, that's exactly right. i'll preface by saying that i think in many ways, this was expected. we knew that there was what is known as locally transmitted zika infections. what that means -- we've been talking about this for some time -- we know that people who are getting zika in the united states prior to what we've been seeing in florida, they got it because they traveled to a place where zika infection was located. they brought it back. the thing that they've been on the lookout for for some time is local transmission, meaning mosquitos actually biting someone who has the zika virus in their system, carrying the zika virus in the mosquito's body, then biting someone else. that's local transmission. they knew that it was happening because they already identified people who had not traveled and still had the infection. now as you point out, they have found mosquitos that also contain the zika virus. again

dr. sanjay gupta. sanjay, what stands out to you in clinton's release today? is there anything here that paints a better picture of what her health is like right now? >> we have a little bit more detail about this most recent episode with the pneumonia, wolf. we understand now that she had been having some symptoms for some time. i guess we knew that with the cough and some of the other symptoms. we know she got a cat scan on friday, which was what revealed this pneumonia, for some time, again, we weren't told about the pneumonia until a couple of days later but she underwent significant testing to make the diagnosis on friday, september 9th and was started on a ten-day course of antibiotics at that point. a little more information there. just now as we are talking to you, wolf, we got a letter with more detail. we understand, for example, in january of this year she had significant sinusitis and got antibiotics and steroids at the time and had a tube placed into her ear to try to allow some of the fluid to be drained from around her sinuses. but nothing more
