dr. hairston has served as superintendent of baltimore county.was the first african american in baltimore county and has the longest tenure, this is his last year and today he joins me with more on his career. thank you for being here. >> delighted to be here. >> let's talk -- let's reflect on the 12 years, what comes to mind as you think about those 12 years in. >> there has been rewarding 12 years, very exciting, more importantly, i think reflecting most superintendents and school systems, with over 100,000 students and a diverse population, rarely survive four or five-years and the fact that i'm one of those rare individuals who have benefited for 12 straight years in one school system, speak volumes to the level of support i received from the community special from our board, more importantly the response from our teachers, we have 17,000 employees in baltimore. again those wonderful children, 10 5,000 students and just fantastic. >> and how did you face some of the challenges? >> the superintendent is one of those jobs where you are -- look
