dr. hasan rouhani took the oath of office promising dialogue and prudence, a far cry from the provocative style of his predecessor mahmoud ahmadinejad. rouhani, a cleric who studied law in britain is a moderate reformer. he was the surprise win of the presidential lex back in june when he captured a significant shave of the youth vote. as hasan rouhani begins this new term as president of iran, he enjoys enormous popular support. iranians expect great things from him. but it's far from clear if he's going to be able to deliver. his main challenge is the economy. iranians are having a hard time making ends meet as international sanctions brought on by iran's nuclear program slowly choke off the country's oil revenues. on the campaign trail rouhani called for an end to extremism and a turn toward moderation. the u.s. and other western countries hope that is with a signal that he would seek compromise at the next round of nuclear negotiations which are expected to resume this fall. but today rouha

dr. nidal hasan, convicted last week for the 2009 shooting spree at ford hood that left 13 dead. thirty others were wounded in the deadly effort mass shooting ever on a military insulation. heidi zhou-castro joins us now. what can we expect in today's proceeding? >> well, morgan, today is day one of the prosecution's case for capital punishment. we know at least one family member of each of the 13 people killed by hassan will be taking the stand, plus three more of the wounded will be giving their testimony, bringing the total number of witnesses for the government to just around 20. the bigger question is what, if anything will hassan say when it's his turn. he did ask the judge for a break between the government's case and his own, indicating he is planning something, but morgan, you just never know what will come out of this guys mouth. he already indicated that if he were given the death penalty, he would consider himself a martyr. >> you mentioned the death penalty, heidi. what kind of problems would the death penalty really present? >> well, if he is sentenced to death as e

dr. sanjay gupta is here with more. >>> we start with an unusual and traumatizing murder trials in a very long time. the defendant, u.s. army psychiatrist nadidal hasan wentn a rampage three weeks before he was scheduled to deploy to afghanistan walking into a troop processing center. he says he did it for alah. he admits this by the way but legally cannot plead guilty soft today in opening statements on day one of his court marshall acting in his own defense, if you want to call that, he made a case for the prosecution and that only begins to cover the strangeness of these proceeds. as for how traumatizing it will be, he'll question some of the very people he shot and on top of that, get this, he's still pulling down a paycheck from the army. he's earned hundreds of thousands of dollars while awaiting trial. we'll explore that in a moment. first covering the court marshall, ed, you were there in court today. take us inside. what was it like? >> reporter: anderson, in many ways it was intense. many anticipated to see how he would act. the prosecutors started with a vivid picture methodically going through the steps he took in the massacre and it was

dr. oz made val want -- valiant attempts to save it. what a story. gregg: closing arguments set for today in the court-martial trial of accused fort hood shooter nidal hasantting on almost no defense at all against charges that he murdered 13 people in 2009. casey stiegel is live from fort hood, texas. casey, he want ad piece of evidence presented to the jury. what is it? >> reporter: gregg, just one single piece of evidence and it's a glowing performance evaluation that he received while he was practicing as a psychiatrist in the u.s. army. court starts in about five minutes at the top of the hour and we have a busy day ahead. here is how it will all go down. first the jury will get all their instructions on the charges from the judge, then we move straight into closing arguments. the prosecution plans on taking an hour or so, using a power point presentation. this it goes to major hasan, hard telling how much or how little time he will take. then the prosecution gets a rebuttal. by this afternoon, we're told by fort hood public affairs folks we in fact could see the panel get this case. if he is found guilty by the 13-member panel, we move into the sent
