not mine but apparently these and, of course, i have our expert dr. jill chase.lways happy to see you, jill. >> hi. >> this is lucy. >> they lucy. she is a cavalier king charles spaniel and along with some other breeds, they are prone to developing my central valve disease. so basically, a murmur is when we listen to their heart and we hear a sound other than bump, bump, we hear a whoosh. the heart is a pump. it has four chambers and if the blood moves through it should moot through smoothly. if it doesn't we'll -- -- it should move smoothly. >> do they develop this problem or is it something they have from birth? >> this particular dog seems to develop damage to their valves as they age. you could do valve surgery. most don't. there's different types of reasons for valve disease is one. sometimes dogs have cardiomyopathy a fancy word for muscle abnormality of the heart so it doesn't contract well and the blood isn't moving smoothly and so there is a heart murmur. >> other dogs get it. so if dogs develop murmurs, what's the prescription? just take it easy? >> no.

we welcome dr. jill chase this friday. and your friend. >> this is kialana, my lab.about a month ago, i sent out a shoutout to all the other nine siblings for their birthday and i got some grief about not mentioning her by name. so here she is. >> the question comes from one of our viewers who has an older dog who has some health ailments, doesn't go out very often. do pets at age 17-plus, need a rabies vaccine? i have two dogs arthritic, they rarely leave the house but their licenses are due soon. what do you think? >> in california, it's actually the law that all dogs are rabies vaccinated. there's no discussion. we as veterinarians can determine whether or not we can void that. sometimes for example young puppies are traveling from one state to another and they are under 4 months of age until we can say no vaccine but older dogs like this one that she is talking about as long as they are healthy and there's no reason not to vaccinate they should be vaccinated every three years. >> and there's no concern about vaccinating an older dog? >> no. all dogs need to be li

our pet expert dr. jill chase joins us to talk about what to look for and when to be concerned. i have to tell you, i have a couple of dogs and i have noticed some mysterious bumps on mu dog, too. >> i brought mac in because mac has a little mass right here where my fingers are. it's not too big maybe .25" in diameter. the thing is masses can be anything, a tumor, either benign or malignant. it can be a cyst. it could be a foreign body like a little foxtail or splinter that got in there. sometimes it can be a little abscess which is an infection. so whenever you find something like that on your pet you should definitely notify your veterinarian right away. i wanted to talk about the difference between doing a fine needle asperait. they tolerate it well. a little needle we try to draw out cells. a biopsy is actually more definitive. if we take a little tiny piece of tissue, we can see exactly what we're dealing with. >> you don't need to go to the emergency room if you find a bump? >> not generally. i mean, obviously, if it's an oozing, you know, nasty looking bump maybe yes. but
