[ laughter ] >> so, um, so today we're talking about distemper because i have seen a case of that and it's actually prevalent now in the bay area. we don't really think about it that much because we have been vaccinating for decades so we don't see it but we are actually seeing it. so a reminder to make sure your pets are vaccinated correctly with the protocol that's recommended by the veterinary institutions. this is a viruses that usually transmitted through the air. so keeping your dog away from another dog is not necessarily going to keep your pet safe. you need to actually be mindful when you have a puppy who hasn't been vaccinated to keep the dog in doors until your veterinarian tells us it's okay. it's almost uniformly fatal. almost. every once in

dr. jill chase has walter. thanks for being here today. you know, i have had cats my whole life and i have never run into them chewing electrical cords. is this common? >> it's not super common in cats. but some breeds of cats like siamese eat a lot of things that we would not expect like plastic bags and like she is describing. so i was curious to know if her cat was siamese or mix because that would make me wonder about this being a breed disposition. in general, cats who shouldn't be eating all these things, we want to make sure we rule out any underlying medical problems so intestinal parasites would be high on the list and any other gi problems that's still in their stomach or intestinal tract so x-rays, possibly an ultra sound looking for why this cat might be eating things to maybe thinking it's going to make its tummy feel more comes but will be problematic in the future. >> a lot of animals that eat grass? >> that's a really great question. we definitely should address that on another episode but it's true that some owners think t

dr. doudna: yes, that was actually jill banfield who is a geo-biologist. she works on bacteria and where they grow in the environment and how they behave and interact with viruses. her research had uncovered a lot of examples of what we call crisper -- crispr which stands for a series of repeated the quizzes in dna. they are easy -- repeated sequences in dna. what was quite interesting about this pattern of sequences was that an included a series of unique sequences that were erived from viruses. and the question that jill had, she was not equipped to answer in her own laboratory, was whether those sequences stored within these crispr elements, might in fact be copied into rna molecules in bacteria then used to protect the cell from viral nfections. walter: they first discovered that in spain? dr. doudna: right. several microbiology labs had very important early roles in his, for example francisco mojico was one of the people who coined the acronym crispr and there was a group, a yogurt company in denmark, actually, who worked on how to protect their yogur
