it is friday which means our pet expert dr. jillhase is here to answer your pertinent pet questions. furry friends. today's topi >>> every friday we check in with our pet expert to tackle issues that pet owners may be facing with their friends. today's topic, pet peeves. dr. jill chase joins with us brutus. i have buttercup. these are the cutist little dogs i have ever seen. they are siblings. so let's talk, dr. jill, what are your main pet peeves when it comes to pets? >> well, this segment was prompt by the fact that we had a viewer write in talking about the fact that she was concerned about when people drive in a car with their small dogs in their lapse so i thought, okay, we'll talk about my pet peeves. my pet peeves there are four of them. i listed three but four of them are, first of all, if you are going to ride your bike with your dog, try to remember that if the dog is not staying with you, you need to slow way down. nothing drives me crazy more than watching somebody ride their bike and the dog is struggling to keep up. t

dr. jill chase us with my dog [ non-english language ] i have to admit, he is very cute. >> very photogenic. we're talking about canine influenza because it's fairly new in the virus world for dogs so it's not a core vaccine. and it's been around but not in northern california until very recently. it just showed up in san jose and so we know that it will ultimately come here to san francisco east bay and the north bay so the san francisco veterinarian medical association is now recommending we vaccinate dogs to live in san francisco and the north bay and the east bay to protect our pets and hopefully slow down the spread of the disease. it's a nasty virus that causes very high temperatures which in and of themselves can kill pets. it causes respiratory signs, coughing, sneezing but mostly if it gets bad it can produce a very thick mucous discharge and it's hard for them to breathe and doesn't respond to antibiotics. hopefully they can build up an immunity. they almost always require serious ho

dr. jill every friday we check in with our pet expert to tackle issues that pet owners may be facing with their friends. today's topic, we had a viewer to talked to us about his german shepherd who is licking his pillow. what's wrong with that? >> well, i don't know if there's anything wrong about it but the idea is why is this dog licking the pillow? is there an underlying medical issue? does the dog have an ear infection or dental disease? bacteria is making the pillow smell good? but you want to rule out medical problems. once you know they have been taken care of, then we can look at behavioral. you know, maybe it's very soothing. but first you want to make sure we rule out medical issues. so blood work, fecal analysis, urinalysis for look for uti. sometimes they are nauseous and they're looking. the saliva from their mouth has a different ph from the tummy so it can neutralize the acid in the stomach. so most important make sure there's nothing wrong with the dog and then we move on from
