dr. jill chase -- joins us today with tips on puppy- proofing your home. ncakes," a female border collie-she old >>> they are cute and furry and can tear up your house. dr. jill chase has tips on how to puppy proof your house. pancake is the cutest thing i have ever seen and love the name. so how do we pancake-proof our house? >> so last week we talked about what you like for, for adopting a puppy and i thought it would be great to talk about how you -- because i'm big on preventative medicine, right? so i wanted to keep her safe and healthy and happy. so it's very important to puppy proof the house. so everything that's on the floor has to be picked up. i always tell my owners if you leave your shoes on the floor and eat them it's not her fault. it's your fault for leaving them on the ground. and actually, interestingly, pancake just recently had an unexpected incident because the owners are good about keeping her protected. she actually ate hair and it came out and it was so stringy that she was having trouble havinger who bowel movement and it scared her

dr. jill chase joins us with cody.ody has been talking the whole show. >> he is six months old so he is just getting ready to get neutered. with kittens they get about 6 months and male or female we will neuter them. unless they come from a shelter. this would apply to dogs also in that the shelters will neuter them when they come in at 8 weeks. so usually if you adopt an animal from there they have already been neutered. i put a graphic on. so you can see the difference. neutering is removal of the reproductive organs and in males it's removal of the testicles and in females it's removal of the ovaries and the uterus. >> i don't think cody likes this topic. >> no. really fun for me at work because men always cross their legs when we talk about it. [ laughter ] >> in female dogs there's an old wives' tale that you should let them go through a heat cycle but we want to neuter them before they get into heat and spare them from breast cancer and smaller dogs are at risk for that. if you can't do, there's still a reduction

dr. jill chase is here with tito to explain. >> he is akita. >> beautiful dog. >> yeah. >> okay. so what do we need to know? >> so in terms of adopting a dog, we are going to talk about dogs today specifically. it has to do with your lifestyle. if you have children in the house, you want a dog that's going to be family-friendly and good with kids. you have to ask yourself, are you the type of person that wants to be able to go running with your dog or is this more of a dog that goes for nice slow walks? let's see what else. >> environment? >> yeah. environment is very important in terms of do you have a house that has a yard or do you have an apartment? because some dogs are much more -- need to have that yard to move around with where other dogs need an apartment, are okay to live in an apartment. a small dog can run around in an apartment the same as a large dog in a yard. >> some dogs don't like to be left alone. >> personality. i always tell my owners, you have to pick a dog that matches the personality that you like in a dog. so if you like a cute fluffy dog then go for one.
