dr. jill chase joins us now... g with "sally." >> the weather has been great but there's danger for dogs in the form of foxtails. dr. jill chase joins us along with sally. >> so this is sally. i birthed a litter of puppies and this is one of them. we are going to talk about foxtails because i have been seeing that problem lately. i don't know if the camera can see this, but this is a foxtail. >> i'll hold this. >> there are weeds and pointy on one end and they tend to go into the body with that pointed end but they have barbs on them so they can't back out. they keep going in. i basically tell my owners please stay away from where there are foxtails and they will say how can i do that? they are everywhere. so i say walk on sidewalks, mowed grass, go to the beach. but if they put their nose on the ground, they are liable to sniff it up into the nose and it won't back out until it moves back so far there's no more sneezing or they can get caught in between their toes and i tell my owners not only to look with your eyes,

dr. jill chase is here today with some tips. first of all, we have to introduce minerva and postcy named at buster posey because the children in the household are giants fans. >> what do we need to know? >> i think the first thing is it depends on household. if you have children, are they really little children or are they like this family a little older so they can handle having a kitten in the household without damaging the kitten in the process? are you looking for an older cat? sometimes it's nice when people adopt older pets because they need homes and, you know, it's great that somebody takes that on. >> so you want to think about that. >> you want to think about your living conditions, apartment or house? is it going to be indoor or outdoor cat? and then once you've answered those questions, then you can go in knowing what you're looking for. >> so how do you know if you're ready for one or two? i'm looking at minerva and posey and i want to take both of them but they may get big, but not so big. dr. jill chase joins us now along with one of your patients, sequel. >> reporter: right now fleas are a big problem. i can't tell you how many phone calls i have gotten about it. it's absolutely fleas. we have had very dry environment the last 3 1/2 years. >> so the weather plays a part in that? >> it does. usually we get this very cold snap and they go. they tend to go dormant. they just have not. so they have been basically multiplying exponentially. the biggest piece of information is they live in the environment. that's where they spend most of their time. they spend very little time on the pet. so using the topical products while it's helpful to kill them off, if you want to do a good job you need to treat the environment. i wanted to show on sequel, she is a good example, they have a little bit of a problem at their house, not bad. she has been chewing a little. there's less fur, probably hard to see, but that's just because she can only reach from here back. she can't reach this area up here to chew on herself. >> is it painful? >> so it's like getting bit by mosquitos, so it's reall

dr. jill chase here along with "oliver junior"... what do owners need to look out for? >>> prostate disease can be a serious issue for male dogs. our pet expert is here with oliver. what dopers need to look out for? -- what do owners need to look out for? >> this is oliver. so the thing about unneuter male dogs is they have the potential for infection and prostate disease. we don't see it too often because most owners have their dogs neutered but oliver is a perfect example. he is an unneuterred male. he was a sire, he had a puppy. he has been having blood in his urine which is one of the signs of prostate disease. it's easy to deal with usually if you neuter them so he is actually getting neutered we think next week. that's the plan. and i wanted to mention it because sometimes it's a silent disease. people don't know it's going on. or urinary tract infection. >> what are the symptoms? >> sometimes they will drink more water and sometimes urinate more than usual. not always. but that's one of the things. but biggest find is usually blood in the urine and we can diagnos
