dr. jill chase joins us now with some advice. you brought along indigo. >> yes.his is my dog. >> yes. >> so kennel cough is actually just inflammation of the trachea in and bronchus. we vaccinate for bordtatella. shelters get more kennel cough than in the world. but this is a little bit of a concern. we don't usually see that. they have this loud dramatic cough that sounds like they are trying to clear their throat and that's one of the things that we worry about is, is there actually something in the throat? if they are fine in every other respect then we diagnose kennel cough as the problem and treatment, depending how much they are coughing can be anti- coughing medication and sometimes antibiotics if there's a virus and they might get a secondary bacterial infection. so if this dog has a discharge they need to be attended to. normally in serious cases we see more eye, nose discharge, more the cough. i should also mention that the length of time for the disease can be as small as two weeks to as long as six weeks. and it's highly contagious. so while the dogs

dr. jill chase is here with cody to give us some tips to keep them safe. >> cody has been coming on since he was a little baby so now he is almost a year old. cody is a tv star! so we are going to talk about halloween. the not too much to say except that to remind people that chocolate is very toxic to animals and can be lethal so be careful. also black cats if you have a black cat try to keep the black cat inside because we don't want them to accidentally be the victim of some unkind person. and, um, what was the other thing i wanted -- oh, when you're taking your dog out for a walk, make sure it's well lit so that reflective tape or lights or whatever and another thing is to keep them very close to you when you're crossing in a crosswalk because cars don't often see the little dogs. they will see but not the dog. so sometimes people will walk their dogs and the dog will be ahead or behind and that's how they can get hit by a car. >> we always hear about chocolate being dangerous but nuts are toxic, too. >> my rule of thumb no people food for dogs and cats. if you follow that rule, you w

dr. jill chase joyce us along with quincy -- joins us along with quincy with some answers. good afternoon. >> anytime there's discharge we're concerned. we are taught that eyes are considered medical emergencies and one thing i wanted to show owners is that if you are looking to see if there's redness in the eye lift from the upper eye little from the top. if you lower the lid like this it's always going to look red so always look at the top. and one of the things that we are going to check when the animal comes this is, is the white of the eye red? are there any -- is there any evidence of a foreign body in there? does it look like there's been a trauma? is the cornea scratched? so green discharge from an eye is not okay. definitely needs to be addressed. >> quincy here is fine? >> he looks great, yeah. um, i do wonder about the scab buy peels she is talking about and so if she is talking about discharge around the eye, so as i show on quincy, around here, if there's any fur loss, then that would increase the things we would be thinking about, maybe allergies would be on m
