dr. jill chase is here, along with "harper." >>> every friday, we check in with our pet expert to tackle issues about pet health concerns. today's topic, signs that your dog may be going deaf. dr. jill chase is here along with harper. good-looking dog. >> so, deafness is really common as animal a -- animals age. when you take your pet into the veterinarian, they should be taking a history. they should be saying, how are they eating? sometimes owners will say to me, my pet is not really listening to me anymore. she can hear me but she's not listening. that's actually a sign of early deafness. it's not that they are becoming willful or ignoring you, it's that they are not hearing you as well. and then as they progress, they become deaf. the good news is, ift thaney issweue any more so always nice. i encourage people, if they have puppies, to train them using hand signals. come, stay, sit, lay down. so when they do become deaf you can still communicate with them. they are very good at adapting to becoming deaf. they still know how to move around the house and do the things they normally do.
