dr. jon lapook, cbs news, new york. >> pelley: the civil war in syria we have been tell you about is takingble toll on civilians and we got pictures in the newsroom today that real caught our attention. the syrian air force bombed this neighborhood in the town of marat al noman. the town was recently taken by rebels who are fighting the assad dictatorship that has run syria for more than 40 years. about 40 people were killed here. as often, there were children. this picture in particular seemed to sum up the war that is only escalating. syria beyond help or reason, 20 months into the conflict, with no end in sight. something will be missing from newsstands next year. "newsweek" magazine said today after nearly 80 years, it is ending its print publication. the first "newsweek" cover in 1933 featured seven captioned photoes, one for every day of the week. there may have been many eye-catching covers since then, but sales have slumped and "newsweek" is going all digital after december. a goof-up cost google billions of dollars in a matter of minutes today. we'll have that next. >> pelley: bad

dr. jon lapook is our medical correspondent. seth just said the c.d.c. is investigating how the vials were contapped. how might they have been contamentd? what are the possibilities? >> reporter: scott, that medication is supposed to be prepared nay sterile environment but if there's a breakdown in the system there could be contamination in the fungus. it's common in soil, decomposing leaves and even floating in the air. >> pelley: if the fungus is everywhere, as you describe it, why is it so dangerous in this case? >> reporter: in somebody with a normal immune system the lungs filter it out. when you inject it directly into the spine, that's like a straight highway to the brain. >> pelley: jon, thank you very much. it has been more than three weeks since that deadly terrorist attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. today, the will bean government finally allowed a team of f.b.i. agents to see the crime scene. four americans were killed in that attack, of course, including ambassador chris stephens. the agents, with a u.s. military escort, spent

dr. jon lapook. >> reporter: the food and drug administration tested 50 vials suspected to be a source of con contamination in the meningitis outbreak. they found all 50 were contaminated by bacteria or fungus. the f.d.a. says internal n.e.c.c. documents show the company tested a vial from the same lot in august and labeled it sterile. the inspection also focused on the clean room at n.e.c.c. a clean room like this one is where ingredients are mixed to make sterile medication. the f.d.a. discovered n.e.c.c.'s own monitoring repeatedly found mold and bacteria growing on walls and surfaces. equipment used to sterilize medicine had "greenish-yellow discoloration" and air ducts were dirty. according to the f.d.a., there's no evidence n.e.c.c. did anything to fix the problems. the n.e.c.c. responded today saying "we will review this report and continue our cooperation." >> pelley: jon, thanks very much. we'll look at a key race in the battle for control of the senate. and we have the first video of malala, the pakistani girl shot by the taliban. an update on her condition when the "cbs evening

dr. jon lapook was there. god good morning. >> god morningod morning, charlie. i got there late last night. the lobby was filled with doctors, nurses firemen, police trying to get people out of the hospital. they've gotten all but 50 out. that included kids neonatal icu kids. four of them were intubated. when i got there, they were being brought out, bagged manually. one was a 29-week-old premature baby, swaddled with a small face mask. >> this nurse was carrying this premature baby and doing some of the -- >> absolutely. >> how could this happen in a hospital like this one of new york's premiere hospitals, that generators fail? >> i found out, and i think this is really news. there were two generators. there was a primary backup generator that was on the roof. then there was a secondary backup generator that was at a lower level. what happened was the flood came in. it took out the secondary backup generator. the problem was that the pump that was lower down that sent fuel up to that primary backup generator on the roof that got flooded. so it ran out of fuel.
