dr. keith ablow.ou for getting up early and joining us this morning. >> pleasure. >> that's the question so many people are asking. we hear about these comedians time after time. how do people who spend their lives making people happy suffer from severe depression. >> i have treated comedians, i have treated ceo's, i have treated politicians who do their jobs, but intermittently suffer with this dark, dark period of major depression. it can be incredibly severe. we have incredibly effective treatments. >> speaking of treatments robin williams had gone into rehab multiple times, most recently last month in july he sought out help help. what treatments are available? >> people need to understand if they aren't getting the results they think they should, that means getting cbb4zbetter, peri. some people say with psychiatrists for years they get a little better. new treatment magnetic stimulation uses magnets. it helps a lot of people. believe it or not. >> that's a new treatment? >> ket mean infusions. i

dr. keith ablow is with us. because you can't see it, you can't physically see depression, i suspect we underestimate the extent of depression in our society. mri? >> absolutely. 20 million people last year suffered with depression. this is epidemic. stuart: when you say depression, that is not a bad mood, not you feel a little down. it is you can't get out of bed. >> this is real clinical depression. talking about your self-esteem is falling through the floor, you can't concentrate, you can't sleep, your appetite is vastly affected usually tremendously reduced. these are folks who can't see forward to the next chapter of their life stories, they literally think it is that bleak. stuart: can you treated? >> absolutely. that is the tragedy of robin williams's death. i haven't met a person i can street. stuart: if someone comes to you with clinical depression you can't cure it? fix it? >> i tell people at my door and my going to get better? i say i promise you you will be restored. i promise. know ifs, ands or but

dr. keith ablow. depression is real. it's something that millions of people struggle with.what you've said. this is a real illness that affects tens of millions of people a year. it can be fatal. people should be in fear of it when it strikes, family member, doctors should consider it potentially lethal. at the same time as telling people, 'cause it's true, almost everybody can recover from this. in fact, everybody can because we have more tools than ever at our disposal and if you wage war against this disorder, you can win. >> how? >> number one, psycho therapy is still a gold standard treatment to find out what traumas, what dynamics are fueling this unbearable sadness and suffering. secondly, medicines, more powerful than ever and more are coming. thirdly, club drug, when given by i.v., can crush major depression, can end suicide -- >> does it give you a false high or does it balance you out to give you a level playing field? >> studies are showing that it literally regenerates nerve cells, literally creates connectivity between nerve cells that wasn't there. that's the
