dr. knabb, chad here. those waves that will be under that storm could be 10 to 15, especially swells in the middle of the ocean. that will be a coastal erosion issue as well. but going back to the rainfall you talked about, when that rainfall is on the piedmont -- talking about topography here -- that's where you really see the potential loss of life today, isn't it, where that heavy inland fresh water flooding. >> yes. got to make the distinction between the saltwater flooding and coastal areas that is the storm surge and the inland flooding that can happen days after landfall occurs and can happen hundreds of miles from where that landfall occurred and far inland from the coast. because of the size of the system, it is potentially going to drop some heavy rainfall in the complex terrain that you just mentioned. but anywhere where it rains five to ten inches or more, if it exceeds a foot of rain and are you on a road that's covered by water, you could be in a life threatening situation. you go

dr. rick knabb. i wonder if you can give us a sense of what this storm looks like right now and exactly where it is. >> well, it is inland over southern georgia. that's where the center of circulation is, but that's not the complete story on where the center of action is. there's still plenty of onshore flow here in the florida big bend area. water levels have not come completely down. we still have wind gusts at a minimum to tropical storm force. that's starting to happen over on the atlantic side of florida. look at the rain starting to move into south carolina. heavy, heavy rainfall over much of the state of georgia, the southern half especially. so a lot of hazards at the coast and inland happening now and more to come as this heads up the east coast. >> dr. knabb, it's chad myers here. let's push this storm forward. let's move this story into the carolinas, offshore maybe for the weekend. all i've been saying is don't go in the ocean this weekend, it will be a dangerous place, right? >> very tru

that's what dr. knabb from the hurricane center was talking about. if it does that and stays there a long time, it could actually regenerate itself. that water is significantly warm enough. about 30 degrees celsius. very, very hot. you only need 24. we're way over 85 degrees fahrenheit. that's enough water, enough heat in that water to make this storm get bigger again. but for now, flooding into georgia, parts of south carolina, north carolina, and wind at about 50 miles per hour. you saturate the roots of the trees and all of a sudden you blow them over. that's going to take down more power lines. even by late tonight. it is still only to about myrtle beach or so. but then it goes over cape hatteras and gets back into the ocean right there. now it is only a 45-mile-per-hour storm at that point. right now it is down to 60. but as it just sits there and gains more strength, it could sit for three solid days because of a high pressure to the north. not going to let it move any farther away. typically they just skedaddle out into the atlantic ocean. thi
