also with us, dr. lena wen, the author of "lifelines." both very important, very timely books.ding back to school, the political fight over mask mandates is intensifying dramatically now. what do you say to governors like ron desantis that are actually fighting to keep masks out of schools? >> it's time for governor desantis to decides what matters. is it kids and families, or is it politics? very simply, wolf, if i wear a mask and dr. wen wears a mask, if my mask is, say, 70% effective, if we're both wearing masks, together, we're 90% effective. so mask mandates are not just important for the kid being vaccinated but every kid in the classroom depends on other kids. if he overrules them, he's overruling conservative principals and local control, but more importantly he's putting kids at real risk. he has pediatric hospitals filling up. it is time to put politics aside and say he was wrong and it's time to move on. >> nearly 94,000 cases of coronavirus in children were reported in the past week alone here in the united states. what is it going to take to get kids back to school

sanjay gupta, dr. lena wen and author of "life line, a doctor's journey." what do you make of what the doctor said? >> even up until yesterday there was a lot of back and forth on this. not a slam dunk decision, so to speak, because as the cdc was telling clinicians there was no basis forg getting booster shot. the other thing that strikes me, you're hearing a rationale for anticipating what may come and trying to get ahead of that. there's not the data showing a decrease really in the effectiveness of these vaccines for hospitalizations and people dying of this disease. there may have been more people who are getting mild and moderate illness. what they're saying and what he's saying all day long today is that there may be a connection there. people are more likely to get mild or moderate illness now, that may mean people are more likely to get hospitalized or die later. they want to get ahead of it. it's interesting but i think as we've all talked about the vast majority of the problem is the 85 or 90 million people who are not vaccinated. when it comes t
