leslie coleman, dr. dorothy height and of course shirley chisholm.bessie coleman refused to take no for an answer. though she dreamed of becoming a pilot new york flight school in the united states would accept her simply because she was a woman and because she was black. so she refused to take no for an answer, she enrolled in flight school in france and became the only woman and the only person of color in her class in paris. . she soon became the first american of any race to hold an international pilot license. several weeks ago a portion of the airport drive at the oakland international airport in my district was renamed the bessy coleman drive. it was such an inspiration to be part of this dedication ceremony because she of course was from or worked in oakland and really went to many of her classes and learned a lot about piloting in oakland, california. another great woman who refused to take no for an answer was our beloved, the great dr. dorothy hyde. let me say how fortuitous it is that today is dr. hyde's birthday. she was a bold and brill

dr. davis and the such together. we all herald a great deal. i want to thank michelle summers from the publishers, as well as leslie from the gilder lehrman institute for their help and cooperation and arranging this evening. i also would like to very much welcome and recognize members of the board of trustees who have taken the time to cover this evening as well. thank you for that. a few brief words of introduction from my part. one of the reasons that i was so glad i'd jump at this opportunity was because the work of professor davis been such a great deal to us. personally my own work has drawn upon and benefit from some of professor davis' writings, years ago when i was researching and comparing anti-semitism and anti-catholicism online. to get a sense of the breadth of professor davis' work, that didn't even for slavery which is what we here to talk about tonight, and yet was landmark in its own right on those areas as well. and we are greatly indebted to professor davidson scourge in confronting anti-semitism, particularly again a few decades ago when it was a ton of great controversy and great tension, yet he stood up and very forthright to
