dr. levine, a pediatrician based here in new york, she worked with the american academy of pediatrics anda mother herself. thanks for being here this evening. this is difficult for parents to accept because there's almost a helpless feeling that it brings about. what should parents be looking for in their children in the early developmental years. >> early intervention really improved out. if you have a child that is 18 months old and doesn't make good eye contact and doesn't recognize their own name and respond to their own name, doesn't point to things, doesn't wave, doesn't interact with other children, then you want to talk to your pediatrician. all pediatricians are screening children for autism at the age of 18 months and two years, but as a parents, you can play a role in helping with the diagnosis. >> what is the big take away? what one thing stood out in your mind we should all take away from it? >> the big take away is there's an increase in identification of children with autism spectrum disorders. this can help guide our research dollars. we need to allocate them towards findi

dr. levine, aped pediatrician based here inw york, and he's a mother herself. good to have you here.t should parents be looking for in their children in the early developmental years. >> they're supposed to screen for signs of autism at 18 months and 24 months, but there are things parents can look out for as well. by 18 months, most children should be responding to their name. if your child doesn't respond when you call out their name, you want to seek medical attention for that. also, children at this age will be able to point to objects. they should wave bye-bye when someone leaves the room or when they're prompted. they tend not to tune out other people around them. this is when they're social and interacting. they should be interacting with other children as well, and this is also a time where children should be -- should be interested in children and also making eye contact with them. >> you can imagine certainly how difficult this is for parents to hear this kind of news, these kinds of numbers. one thing we should take away from the study, what is it. >> there's an increase i

dr. miller. >> thank you, chairman. chairman levin, senator mccain, members of the committee, thank you for inviting me to testify today. i am pleased and honored to be here with our outstanding commander in afghanistan, general john allen. the united states vital objectives in afghanistan remain to deny safe haven to al qaeda and to deny the taliban the ability to overthrow the afghan government. this administration is committed to meeting these core objectives and while we have faced and will face serious challenges, our strategy is succeeding. our counterterrorism efforts against al qaeda have been extremely successful. although the job is not finished there is no doubt that we have severely degraded al qaeda's capacity. as a result of the surge launched in 2009, we have broken and reversed the taliban's momentum. and the afghan national security forces are increasingly capable and increasingly in the lead. mr. chairman, our forces are performing extremely well as i saw first-hand in a trip to afghanistan that i took two weeks ago.

dr. james levine and he's been studying this for years and we know 30 machines of exercise a day cuts downart disease, obesity, cuts down on cancer, wuts down on stroke, but the thing is, we also know that even if you exercise, if you're saiden tear, watch television for more than 40 hours a week, if you don't get off your did you have you end up with the same risk of diabetes and obesity and heart disease. so he's right in that way. he invented this treadmill work station which only goes 1 mile per hour, but in going 1 mile per hour, which is comfortable, you burn off 100-calories an hour, 1000-calories a day. jenna: i can see a lot of workers' comp issues on that, doctor! can you imagine, a loss of productivity because they trillion and fall while trying to type a paper and walk on a treadmill? he makes the point it's a lot better for us to stand while working and if we don't want to listen to the whole lifetime issue, there's a waistline issue as well. he says simply by standing you burn three times as many calories as do you sitting. i'm sure that's gotten some of our viewers' attentio
