dr. marc siegel and author of the book "inner pulse" and, a urologist from atlanta, georgia, joins us.ant to get started with you, a doctor with your own practice, and five employees in your clinic and that makes you a medical practitioner and a business person, having to take care of the business side of medicine. when you think about obamacare what will it mean for you both as a doctor and as a business person? >> we were told when we started down this road, president obama, if you had a doctor you could keep him if you were happy with him and happy with your insurance company you would keep them and the first point, you be keep your doctor, reimbursement is down and cost of doing business is up and doctors all over atlanta are getting off of medicare. and, we have had to move our office and get a less expensive location so we can keep our medicare patients and we are definitely being impacted by the financial aspects. >> governor huckabee: and let me interrupt. one thing i don't think most people understand, the doctors are getting paid by medicare. what is the percentage of the act

dr. marc siegel, member of our fox news medical a-team. dr.here is a report in the associated press that says paramedics are using expired drugs. we as patients are told to throw out our expired drugs. is there a danger in what they're doing? >> alisyn, i'm really glad we're putting a spotlight on this today. frankly we're talking about chemotherapy being short. we haven't focused enough about drugs being shortage in emergency rooms. this is crisis in oregon and utah. in our country we have five times more drug shortages than we had a simple five years ago. to answer your direct question. i don't think it is a issue of safety. it is an issue how effective the drugs are. for first year or so after a drug expires i don't think there is any risk to the patient. the question if the patient comes in with allergic reaction or their heart starts beating you want to give them epinephrine, a very, very powerful drug. the question is will it work after it expires? the farther out from the expiration date the less likely it will work. alisyn: dr. siegel,

dr. marc siegel, member of fox news medical a-team and professor at nyu langone medical center.morning to you, doctor. >> good morning, to you, bill. bill: what do you think of the arguments the governors of iowa and florida. >> i think they're making interesting arguments. consider this. the medicaid expansion will cover people making 133% of the poverty level? the question is, what will it cost the states? if the states decide they won't cover it at a certain point, like we're already worried with physicians. they will pay primary care physicians for two years more but could pull the plug on that in 2013. congress could make it an unfunded mandate. why does a medicaid patient need exact same service when they make a little more money? 133% of the poverty level, bill, is not the same thing as the poverty level. why not some co-pays? why not some deductibles? bill: first of all you're expanding the pool, right? >> right. bill: which requires more money to cover them, right? >> exactly. not only money from medicaid which is billions of dollars. even the five to 10% states end up

dr. marc siegel here. member of fox news medical a-team and professor at nyu langone medical center. one looked at vitamin-d by itself and vitamin-d and calcium taken together. that study says look that doesn't appear to be much benefit. do we take vitamin-d or not. >> i like this study. published in the "new england journal of medicine". it a swiss study. it started with your question, why are previous studies conflicting? you know what they found out? a lot of times you study these things you don't know if people actually take the vitamin-d. they started out with studies that people actually took vitamin-d. that is important. they cherry-picked better studies. they found especially over the age of 65 your risk of fractures go up enormously. 75% of the fractures occur over 75. and in those groups, they looked at over 30,000 people, most of them women, 90% of them women. they found those taking vitamin-d had 10% lower risk of hip fractures and other kinds of fractures. i was impressed with this. jenna: so the age important? meaning can you actually bulk up on the vitamin-d as younger

dr. marc siegel joins me, folks medical a-team. this is shocking study. what do you think about that? all martha, that is not the first survey. there have been several that shown there is deep doctor discontent. deloitte had one. physicians foundation had a survey which showed this is erosion that is not exactly new. it preexisted obamacare but it has gotten worse under obamacare. deloitte had one, physicians foundation had one. doctor/patient medical association has one. all showing doctors being unhappy. martha, i don't think doctors are going to quit. i don't think that is the headline here. i think the headline though if you're going to go see your doctor you don't want your doctor to be unhappy. you don't want your doctor to say the conditions are no good for me, but i have no choice. i have to keep practicing because this is all i know. but i'm not happy. why wouldn't doctors be happy? doctors aren't happy because, first of all, now everyone says doctors aren't happy because it is all about money. it is not only about money. that is small part of it. doctors are unhappy because

dr. marc siegel, fox medical a-teamer. always great to have you.ppens in a situation like this where they have mash casualties into a hospital? >> the first thing that area, denver, has really great trauma hospitals. swedish hospital, university of colorado which are involved are among the top trauma centers in the country. several issues the tear gas or type of smoke that was involved will cause irritants to people's eyes, promote asthma. that is the tip of the iceberg. people that are gunshot victims, main thing you do is stablize them, give intravenous fluids, blood, because they lose a lot of blood. you don't remove bullets unless they're threatening organs. make sure the body organs are not in danger and you wait. you try to keep the patient stable. the other thing mentioned by harvey i want to bring up here there is a huge fear factor going on. it is not surprising that 42% of people polled say they don't want to go to the movies. what actually happens, and we're contributing to that on television right now because we have to report this terr

dr. samadi, you heard that cough. >> that was marc siegel. >> jamie: that is what it sounds like and i actuallyou to tell people so they'd know the difference. dr. samadi, why is it coming back. >> multiple reasons, some families are against vaccination and some is the cyclical nature of the disease, every five years you will see that coming up. and, you know, the other thing i really learned while i was studying this and again i don't deal with whooping cough every day and, the vaccination wears off, every ten years, you have to get a booster and the diagnosis is critical. because it starts with a plain russ runny nose and it is typical of flu and then it goes on for days and weeks and you sound like dr. siegel that he end, which is real whooping cough. >> jamie: i remember, in california, years ago, actually it was on the rise. is it seasonal? is it certain places around the nation, right now? >> it tends to be all year around but especially like all respiratory viruses in the winter and i have to tell you, jamie, it is a worse problem than everyone realizes, the cdc says 15,000 cases reporte
