dr. maria ledesma, chair of san jose state's department of education leadership. dr. ledesma, appreciate the time. i'll come back to california schools, but let's start broadly here. if the court ends the use of affirmative action, what would be the impact on colleges across the country? sure. well thank you for addressing this topic. i think actually, there's a lot of lessons that can be learned from california. think very likely. what we will see is that if the court ends the use of race conscious affirmative action practices in admissions into universities, we'll see. a chilling effect, just as we saw in california when the passage of proposition 209 happened. and on that note, here in california, proposition 209 ended affirmative action at california public universities in 96. so what has been the impact in building diverse student bodies? sure. well we saw that in the immediate aftermath of the passage of proposition 209. you had a drastic and dramatic drop in applications into some of the

joining us now, dr. mariadez ma, professor at san jose state's college of education, who specializes in affirmative action. doctor, nice to have you on the program. as you know, as so many of our viewers know, this is such a divisive issue. these two cases we're talking about are in massachusetts and north carolina. as we stand right now, what's the admissions policy in california? >> in california, the consideration of race has been eliminated since the passage of proposition 209 in 1996. so for close to 30 years, race has not been a factor when considering college admissions in the state of california. >> what happened after that ban went into effect? did the csu and uc drop in terms of enrollment of blacks and latinos? >> yes. as a matter of fact, immediately after the passage of proposition 209, there was an immediate chilling effect that resulted in a drastic drop in the number of applications that were seen by students who identify as black, as latino, other minority groups. there was a great, again, dro
