dr. marshall, it was my first meeting it was a very warm summer night and we had to take our jackets off and we were in a very crowded auditor um and we were hearing about was gang violence. and red verses blue and 22nd and bryant and we heard about numerous shootings and homicides, it was completely different than tonight, while miss brown, i know that people continue to work on your son's homicide and we promise that will never leave our radar screen, but that meeting in the mission it was just about pure mayhem that was taking place and i think that a lot to do was the chief and the men and women and the san francisco police department and captain i know that you were involved back then when you were in the narcotics and you had a significant role in doing what cleaned up the mission district and now it is the captain and so i have to tell you that it is incredible progress out here in the mission and it is just great to be here tonight and it is a much, much different circumstance, but we can't do it without the community and i want to thank all of you for taking an active role from

dr. marshall. >> and i think that you heard, director hicks said that i really want to thank sam, and patty lee for coming on the show on sunday. and know the events of ferguson have focused a lot of attention on the citizens encounters with the police and i felt that it would be a good time to talk about can and legally can't do and legally can and can't say and wish that you should or should not do. or should or should not say, in those encounters and that the two hours went by way too quickly. and i have already had a number of people already call me and say thank you, can we do it again? and can we do it again? and i talked to the young people, last night, at the program at the club and i actually speaking to a bunch of young people and they wanted to talk about it. and so, it would have been difficult to do, without them, and they were really really good. i think that it is something that we have to continue to talk to our young people about in particular, and you know, i got calls from way around the country, it was not even local and one of the things that i we would do and talk abou

dr. marshall chatland assistant professor at georgetown university. there are a lot of jurisdictions involved, captain ron johnson with the highway ba trol, ferguson police department and st. louis community police. could the investigation get cloudy by so many hands so to speak involved? >> it could, but it shouldn't. i think as you were pointing out earlier when you were talking to benjamin crump, there are different pieces to what happened. there was one piece related to the video released today and that robbery. that has nothing to do with the shooting that took place 15 minutes later on the street. my hope would be and i think part of what you're seeing is a level of incompetence from the police department. i hope as the investigation proceeds, we will see much more clarity in terms of separating out which -- what the issues are and where the various crime scenes are and investigations around each of those crime scenes so we stay clear and focused on what the real issues are here. >> marsha, is it possible that documents released today could caus

dr. king, what thurgood marshall, supreme court justice, said and felt about dr. king, he was the most controversial figure in the country including inside of black america. so he is murdered on this balcony in memphis a year after giving that speech to the day, april 4, '68, he's dead on that balcony. he dies not having any idea of the monument and the holiday and the postage stamp. took us a long time to come to terms with him. the problem now is the reason i wrote this book is that he's become so sanitized and so sterilized and even lionized that we really haven't come to terms with who he really was, what he really wanted us to address, and we're trying to honor him on the cheap, if you will. but we still haven't come to terms with addressing that triple threat of racism, poverty and militarism. and were he here now, he'd be on those issues every day. >> host: how did you research this book? >> guest: with the help of a young man named jared hernandez, he's one of my staff people who i want to give a shout out to. a lot of good research to pull these facts tog
