dr. martin luther king jr. and the reverend ralph abernathy. they were the three founders at the southern leadership conference in the 1950s. mr. shuttlesworth was a godly and devout man of faith who trained for the ministry, but also braved beatings, bombings, and fire hosings in order to advance the cause of equality. on christmas day itself in 1956, somebody placed 15 sticks of dynamite outside the parsonage where he lived. the explosion destroyed his humble home, but he survived. a year later, in 1957, he and his wife took their daughters to enroll in an all-white school in birmingham. but as they arrived, they were met with men carrying chains, brass knuckles, and baseball bats. his wife, ruby, was stabbed in the head. he was beaten unconscious. mr. shuttlesworth once said from the pulpit, i'm answerable to

dr. martin luther king, jr., just turned 25 in his first sermon in 1954 in montgomery, alabama. this is the actual sermon written on four pages, back and front of lined notebook paper, in dr. king's own handwriting. it is preserved here at the library, the start of what is literally a treasure of dr. king's thinking at the critical moments in civil rights history. for king, the pivotal moment came the next year when rosa parks was arrested on a montgomery bus. this is her lawyer, fred gray, only 25 himself, with the bus seating chart. >> that was a sort of unwritten understanding that the first ten seats, all of those seats, were basically reserved for whites. mrs. parks, i believe, was sitting if i'm not mistaken, she was sitting here. >> the driver asked blacks in that row to give up their seats to a white man. >> everybody got up but ms. parks, and she didn't and was arrested. >> dr. king was asked to be spokesman for a high-risk protest, a bus boycott. his longtime aide, andrew young. >> he was new in the community. and he had no enemies yet. and so he was sort of a consensus

dr. martin luther king jr. dr. king's d.c. will be honored in a dedication on sunday where president obama will be delivering a speech as well as my next guest who's going to be speaking that day as well. our own reverend al sharpton, host of politics nation right here on msnbc. nice to see you this morning. >> glad to be here. >> i don't know when you get time to sleep because you're always working and doing something or traveling somewhere. let's talk about the comparisons they're making. when you hear something like that, what does it say to you about how the tea party is viewing the only pie wall street protesters and is it a fair comparison? >> i think that they're trying to in some ways distinguish somethi something. first they're ignores the fak that the occupation wall street group has raised serious economic issues that many of us in today's civil rights movement has embraced. i don't know of anyone who's embraced it. he fought racial segregation, economic disparities. i don't see any of that in the tea party platform

dr. martin luther king, jr.or well now 345 years for our basic constitutional and god-given rights, and we still confront the fact that we are at the bottom of the economic ladder. we confront the fact that the gap between the medium income of negros and whites is widening every day. >> i don't know, congressman, does that sound familiar to you, the income gap between the working class and the wealthiest americans is widening every day. that's why king's very own daughter, the reverend bernice king said her father would have supported the 99% movement. he stood for both racial and economic justice. one part of the 99% movement has now formed a demands working group and called for a national convention, a list of suggested demands includes a jobs plan and single-payer health care. but the suggestions by the working group have not yet been embraced by the movement as a whole. let's bring in the director of africana studies dr. james peterson. good to have you with us. >> how are you? >> doing fine. how do you thin
