dr. patel: i appreciate the extra special note. kristen: i have some through. some of it is good. some of it is not so great. but we need to know. the federal and state governments have worked as partners to get and distribute vaccines and test. what is going to happen come may 12? what changes? dr. patel: one of the biggest changes is in your sentence, where they will no longer be in the partnership. some of the things that we benefited from, such as retest, vaccines, some of those treatments, they will now move to the free health care marketplace. that may affect some people based on their insurance and health care access the reason why this letter was so important is so that states can look at what they have been giving a resident in terms of these medicare and medicaid expansions and waivers. potentially, for example, about 15 million people may lose medicaid coverage because they will no longer be eligible after may, whereas in early 2020, there was a waiver that band states from kicking p

dr. patel, happy friday. happy lunar new year. thanks for coming on the show. dr. patel: happy lunar new year to you. i cannot believe that it has been three years since we first saw the emergency declaration. it is while that we are talking about moving away from it. kristen: yeah, i mean, three years, and as he finally said, the federal government erred -- ending is emergency may 11, california ending the health emergency at the end of this month. what tactically emergency -- what tactically does this change? dr. patel: two big things. we are moving into the pandemic, where we are learning to live with it, those who are most vulnerable, higher risk. this is potentially the end of the free services, masks, testing, and vaccination sites, and people will have to be more strategic about when they need that care. that is a potential problem, because anyone who is higher risk in uninsured, we need to make sure we have a solution for those of the visuals both locally and nationally. kristen: a lot

kristen: dr. patel, now i want to go to the conversation about the covid emergency ending and some long covid concerns. do you think that was the right time to end local and state emergencies? >> it is hard to speak about the policy decisions behind why this has to -- the declaration is going to be ending soon. it is hard to speak about all the different plans that have been put in place. but i do hope that when this is lifted, that we continue to have the psa's that covid is still out there and long covid is still a risk if you are high-risk or vulnerable, there is still the need to maintain that you are vaccinated and boasted, you have a mask with you in high-risk situations. the one question we have is why we are ending the declaration in february when the federal declaration is said to be ending in may. it seems like we are having a much earlier transition then we need to be. kristen: that's a little -- than we need to be. kristen: that's a little unexpected. charlie, i think you have expressed conc

and then for how long you observed, that's always critical when we write these proposals that dr. patel was talking about, it's crucial to have a very good estimate of how much time. you can't just sort of say we think we need 10 or 20 hours, you need to say we know. and so nasa has developed tools to estimate the sensitivity before launch of the telescope and we have some idea of the faintness of the galaxies we want to see. and this calculation tells us here's how long you think we think you should observe? and then we take it one step further now, nasa has also helped develop excellent data simulation tools. and so you can say, ok, let's say this exposure time tool said you need two hours, let's actually simulate the data. do we actually see the galaxies in those two hours? and we did that process for our early release science proposal to show that yes, we can actually do it. and then it so it turns out that the telescope is working even better than expected. so we can see a little bit fainter than we thought we were going to. >> so do you, so you have -- is it mapped out already in
