dr. sanjay gupta near the border witnessing the desperation on the ground. we tart at the pentagon with that breaking news overnight about a reported plot by iran directing militants to attack u.s. interests if there's a strike. cnn's chris lawrence following it for us. good morning, chris. >> reporter: hey, good morning, chris. yeah, "the wall street journal" is reporting that the u.s. has intercepted communications from iran directing militants in iraq to attack the u.s. embassy in baghdad and other americans there. i've been at that embassy when it has been shelled by mortars and weapons. it is a fortress but the state department put out a warning to workers living and working in iraq. also, new information from officials about the scope of any potential air strike in syria. we are told that aircraft may be used, in fact, it may be bombers, long-range bombers flown by pilots right here in the united states. but these bombers, i'm told, would stay out of syrian airspace and use what's called standoff weapons to trike targets within syria. kate? >> a lot of

dr. sanjay gupta, it's excellent reporting getting back there from the refugee camps. was actually a mosque, right? that they were performing surgeries inside. everything is kind of a makeshift situation there. they do with what they can. >> absolutely. and they were allowed essentially to do that because it's in a particular area of lebanon that is quite sympathetic to what is known as the free syrian army, the fsa. that's why that could happen. they still use a certain floor of that as a mosque but the upstairs floors were all patient floors. that particular floor were all rebel fighters. they acknowledged them as such and they were being treated there. >> you know, the articles urge people to check out cnn.com some of the stuff you've written the printed word which is so moving. i think one of the headlines was nothing makes sense in the camps. it seems extraordinary in place like lebanon these people are going through stuff tribulations once they've escaped a war. explain. >> nothing makes sense in the very, very obvious way and then in a more nuanced way. nothing

dr. sanjay gupta joins me live from beirut. sanjay, good to see you. the injuries you saw today seem quite severe, amputations, spinal cord injuries. do the rebels you spoke to today believe there will be an air strike by the u.s., are they prepared for the influx of wounded? >> i think they believe that there will be an air strike. certainly that seems to be the prevailing sort of idea among the doctors, among the medical staff over there, and they're trying to do the best they can to try and prepare for that, jake, but while they believe the air strike's going to come, they still don't have everything that they need to even possibly take care of the patients right now. so they talk about these emergency plans which are so contingent on getting more supplies. but jake, as you just saw, this is a particularly dangerous part, border area between syria and lebanon, so it is hard for them to get supplies and they themselves, these doctors and medical staff, are worried that they could become targets as well in all this. so it's a very sort of unstable sit

dr. sanjay gupta is reporting that medical worker who's cared for these patients are afraid to talking >>from beirut is, lebanon. first of all, explain to us why. why are they reluctant to even talk about this? >> you know, it's unclear. the overall tenor is one of nervousness and anxiety. you know, you hear from these doctors. they're concerned possibly of any retaliation against them. also the hospitals, they don't want to the identify some of the hospitals where they're practicing. so why exactly that is is harder to say. as you know, you guys have been hearing, it's a very fluid sort of situation from a reporter's standpoint, we have contacts sometimes with these doctors and then the doctors will suddenly go dark. we don't hear from them. the phones that will are being used are disposable phones. one day it's one number, another day it might be skype foens. all of this makes it more challenging. exactly what they're fearful of and from whom is still uncertain. >> risky to be treating the victims. from a medical standpoint, when you talk about the chemical weapons and we've all seen th
