our big story tonight, oprah winfrey, gail king and sanjay gupta join us. gail king and dr. sanjay gupta. >> hello, piers. >> hello. >> this is a really important issue. sanjay, you came up with the concept for this for the magazine. explain why and explain the key findings. >> well, for me sort of thinking about this issue was in many ways thinking about what anybody could do to try to combat something we see every day. as a doctor i was sort of realizing if someone had a cardiac arrest, for example, you might know to go over and start pumping on their chest. when we see somebody who's suffering, maybe from loneliness, someone who's off to themselves, doesn't seem to really be interacting in some way, we usually tend to avoid even more. so what was the cpr of that? that was the sort of question. and that's how this started. there was also this idea that loneliness overall was increasing in this country, and possibly becoming a so i associated with all these other physical findings. key finding, loneliness by itself more than obesity, more than chronic alcohol use, more than

dr. sanjay gupta and debra norville and tom brokaw's former colleague at nbc news, an honorary member of the board of multiple myeloma. welcome to all of you. let me start with you if i may, sanjay gupta. to get a grasp of what this is. what is multiple myeloma? >> well, it's a type of cancer of cells within the bone marrow. the bone marrow's the area of the body that's responsible for producing all sorts of different cells. your red blood cells, white blood cells. this is a type of white blood cell that just starts growing essentially out of control. and as a result, it's a type of cancer that also crowds out the other cells so people don't have enough red blood cells, don't have enough white blood cells. that's really the problem. a lot of times what happens in this is that someone may come and develop back pain that. could be the first thing. that's usually because of what you're looking at there on the screen, those sort of punched out lesions is in somebody's skull that. can develop just about anywhere on the body. that's often what takes people to the hospital in the first place. >>

dr. sanjay gupta. sanjay, all the cases have been reported in california.past 18 months. and doctors say all the children received polio vac makeses. so what do you make of that? >> you know, the polio virus is a -- is part of a family of viruses, and the likely thing that's happening here is that another member of that family of viruses is causing these problems. two of the five children were actually found to have a particular virus known a as enterovirus 68. it can cause similar symptoms. let me point out, and, again, the public health officials have been very clear about this. they don't think this is going to be something that's going to become epidemic or contagious, even spread within families. that's the good news here. they also don't -- right now they're looking for other potential clusters of cases around the country, and that's part of the reason they're talking about this now. in your own community, have you seen something like this, an unusual sort of symptom where a child suddenly becomes weak in one of their limbs? trying to find out if it's

dr. sanjay gupta, hello sanjay. let's start with that. it seems simple. power of a single word. we're lonelier as a society than we've been in a long time. what struck me from a physical standpoint if someone's having a heart problem for example, you might know to go over there and pump on their chest. if someone is suffering from loneliness, we tend to avoid those people. this was part of this campaign was to try and address that prar issue. recognizing that loneliness by itself is a risk factor for so many different things. it increases your risk of premature death almost twice as much. >> what is loneliness. are you saying it as another word for depression? >> they define it as perceived social isolation. you believe you've been socially isolated for some reason. we used to think that the reason that they didn't have as good health was that no one was checking on them, whatever it might be, but we now know there's something much more fundamental happening in their brains. we know evolutionarily, when we evolved as a species, we did it together. people
