dr. sanjay gupta?s a health care worker working in saudi arabia in that capacity. he flew back, went from saudi arabia to london, then chicago by plane and then took a bus to indiana. it was three days later that he started to get sick, with fever and difficulty with his breathing. it sounds like he is in stable condition. he is not on a breathing machine and just getting oxygen. and most importantly he is in isolation. they confirmed he has the virus so the isolation is part of the treatment. >> and they believe that camels are the reason for the outbreak? >> yes, for two months they have been looking into this, anderson. in the past two months they examined the camels and their blood. they found that 3/4 of them had anti-bodies of the virus, meaning they had been exposed. in the past week they found the actual virus in the camels, identifying it as the same strain. so camels are a good source, they don't know how, is it the droplets, the meat, milk? they're just not sure right now. >> and that is in

dr. sanjay gupta who is at the cnn center with more. good morning, dr. gupta.d recall. that's going to raise flags. what does it mean? >> what's interesting here is that it's a lot of beef, first of all, as you point out, 1.8 million pounds of ground beef. it's still 11 people sickened in four states. none of that has changed. it's more the scope of this investigation has changed. they're saying look, we know the four states obviously, the people got the beef there. but it looks like it's been distributed more widely. and typically, you know, you think about places like distributing to restaurants only because it's fresh ground beef forre restaurants. they're concerned it may have gone to other places as well, possibly getting into retail stores. that's got the real concern, i think, for everybody raised. >> so then, i can't imagine this. ground beef. it's something that so many of us use all the time. not just restaurants. is if you're ordering at a restaurant. also grocery stores, convenience stor stores, people will have to look in their fridges. >> look in

dr. sanjay gupta is out front with us., this latest case, alarming the only physical contact was a handshake, but does this mean the virus is easier to catch than we thought? >> it could mean that. typically when we talk about people being in close contact, means health care workers or family members, so when you hear about a handshake, it obviously raises concern, but there's a couple very important points. this man, the third person to become infected, he didn't get sick. the reason they found this, they were screening the people the original infected person came into contact with and when they screened this guy, they found he had the antibodies to the virus. they didn't find the actual virus, they found antibodies, meaning his body was mounting an immune response to the virus, but it's important, he wasn't sick. it could be easier to spread than we previously thought, but could mean there's a lot of people out there who get exposed to this, they don't get sick at all or get just mildly sick and that can potentially be s

dr. sanjay gupta. this new case of mers was passed by just a hand shake.oes that change everything we think we know about this virus? >> it could, anderson. there's a couple of important caveats here. when we think about this virus spreading only through close contact we mean health care workers or family members. what's very important to point out and you may have heard this new case was someone who did not become ill, they weren't sick, they were screened because they had come in contact with someone that was known have the infection. they didn't become ill themselves. also they didn't find the virus in this third person's body they found what are known as anti-bodies. it's a clue the virus was there and the body fought it off but didn't find the virus itself. so what's interesting here there could be a lot of people exposed to mers, got mildly ill didn't visibility their doctor and that could be good news. this could mean it's not as serious or as deadly as we had thought. >> what are the symptoms that signal someone could be infected. >> it starts off

dr. sanjay gupta with us.happened to this specific pool. everyone is sitting there fine. the girl touched the handrail. i'm going to explain why that's important. you see the father, whoever this man, is jump back for a second and get her out. you see a girl there, as you pointed out, everybody is okay. the grandfather here comes over, gets her out as well at this point. he may have gotten a little electrical charge himself. he falls backwards. a couple of important points. the water was likely electrified. we know that. kids are swimming just fine. but at the time this girl touches the handrail, she becomes the ground. we think of electricity, we think of it going to ground. she becomes the ground. it's flowing through her body into that handrail. that's why she becomes limp like that. he touch it is handrail for a second, same sort of thing happens. the water was electrified later on because there were wires that hadn't been inspected properly that were releasing some of the electricity into the water as opp

dr. sanjay gupta. sanjay, how easy is it to get sick from this contaminated meat? >> it's pretty easy. because there is all sorts of different strains of e. coli. some are going to have no effect on your body at all. but this particular strain is a bad player. and what i find really interesting is just 100 cells, the amount that would fit on the tip of a needle is all it takes to get you sick. if that's sitting in meat and it's sitting out, kit replicate every 15 minutes and double in size. you can get billions of cells pretty quickly, get a lot of people sick. >> so if you eat it and it's undercooked, chances are you're in trouble. >> it's not in every lot of meat that is out there, but there has been enough of a concern, people have gotten sick that they have proven this is happening. >> and how dangerous is this? >> so with this particular e. coli, you get a range of things. some people are just going to have a couple of miserable days, you know, it's no fun. the problem for some people is that they develop kidney problems. and it's actually a problem where the kidneys start to have

dr. sanjay gupta who is with us in new york. sanjay, i want to talk to you about e. coli. how easy is it to get sick from it? >> there is e. coli and then there's e. coli, different strains of it. this particular strain is one of the bad players. this is the stuff that gets you sick pretty quickly. people will feel -- they get nauseated, they'll feel abdominal cramping. the real concern with this is that it can affect your kidneys. when we talk about deaths resulting from it, it's usually from a kidney problem. what's staggering is the amount. they say about 100 cells. it's on the tip of a needle. that small an amount. and if it's just left out, it doubles its size every 15 minutes or so. you can get billions of cells relatively quickly in some meat has left outside. that is part of what's raised so much concern here. >> just looking at the map there to see all the areas it's grown. we know that there's a slightly bigger recall. a couple of things that are frustrating folks. we know that the beef was sent to some distribution centers, and that's been made public, but they'

dr. sanjay gupta has more. >> reporter: fred, we know this is an american.are worker and doing a job in saudi arabia and traveled back from saudi arabia through london, chicago and then took a bus to indiana. it was three days after they arrived to get ill and a day later in the hospital in isolation. the patient appears to be in isolation on oxygen in stable condition. there are not a lot of questions. we don't know where the virus comes from. they believe it made a jump from camels to humans. camels have the anti-bodies. they found the virus itself in camels. exactly how it gets transmitted. droplets in camels spit or meat or camel milk, they don't know. this patient is doing well. 1/3 of patients die from this particular infection. he is on oxygen and appears to be recovering well. unlike sars, this does not appear to spread as easily from human to human. with mers, we don't know yet. we will keep an eye on things. fred, this wasn't unexpected. you have a global air travel system. you have people moving quickly from country to country. there have been cas
