dr. sanjay gupta. sanjay, how deadly is this bacteria? >> this is a pretty bad one.used this term super bugs and what they are really saying is this is an incredibly tough bacteria to treat because it is so resistant to antibiotics. in fact this particular bacteria is resistant to a class of antibiotics so these are a particular class of bugs now that sometimes make these things that can fight off antibiotics, they have really evolved to be able to protect themselves against many of the treatments. so that's what makes them so difficult, so difficult to treat. >> officials say that maybe 100 patients maybe even more may have been exposed. is this super bug contagious? >> it does not appear to be contagious. a really good question. not something that spreads through the air or spreads easily by any means. the way they seem to have contracted these infections is through a procedure known as an ercp a type of scope procedure designed to specifically look at the pancreas and the gallbladder to some extent. they believe these scopes were used that, they had been cleaned t

dr. sanjay gupta joins me now. you went today to look at the instrument.was your impression and what makes it a super bug carrier? >> i've worked in hospitals for a long time. i've never seen anything quite like this in terms of the cleaning process. it's a scope but has a little mechanism at the end. it's the elevator. it allows the scope to do certain things once it's already inside the body. it's that very area that you're looking at that can also trap bacteria. whatever type of cleaning you can soak that in fluids or do whatever you want but unless you actually get around that elevating mechanism it may not be completely clean. it is a bit concerning because it really relies on a human element to make that as clean as possible. >> i mean, as you point out, just looking at those pictures how incredibly hard this is to clean. that's at the heart of the out break. a human being has to clean this. others don't. those are the ones where people are at risk of super bug. how do you clean this thing right? >> it's quite remarkable. it's a $30,000 piece of equi

dr. sanjay gupta. what's the latest? this map, i want to show you this map of what's happening. most of the measles cases in california but it has spread literally coast to coast now as you can see there. when we call these individual state health departments, we find that the numbers are probably a little bit higher than are being reported by that map. there's a lag time there. the state of georgia, for example, was not lit up on that map but we know there's at least one person who has measles in this state as well. numbers are probably higher. to your point, carol, they are growing at a slower rate if you will. still going up but not as rapidly as the numbers had gone up initially. we have a better idea of who is getting measles in terms of vaccination status and this probably won't be that surprising. roughly 5 in 10 were unvaccinated. that's not the complete picture. 4 in 10 didn't know. most of them likely not vaccinated as well. 1 in 10 were vaccinated. that's sort of the picture right now when you look at the 140

dr. sanjay gupta.s the situation, is it getting worse in the country? >> it looks like the numbers are still going in the wrong direction, still more cases. but it doesn't seem to be growing as quickly as it had been before. take a look at the map. quickly this gives you an idea of how quickly an outbreak can spread. with something as contagious as measles. most of the cases in california as we know. but literally coast to coast, andky tell you, this is the map from the center force disease control. we've been calling state health departments ourselves, we know the numbers are a little bit bigger. for example, georgia did not light up on the map, but we know there's at least one patient with measles in georgia as well. so the numbers have grown a bit. and we've started to break down who are the people that are getting measles, in terms of their vaccination status. take a look if you break it down. five in ten were unvaccinated. four in ten didn't know if they were vaccinated. were likely not vaccinated

dr. sanjay gupta. good to see you again. lot of people don't know this or take it seriously but it is a very serious disease and can be really dangerous for infants. >> yeah it can be particularly dangerous for the youngest among us for a couple reasons. one, obviously they are more likely to be able to get the infection because the vaccine is not given until after one year of age. just as a baseline they are more likely to become infected. if you look at all the various potential complications, deafness being one of them other neurological problems people having significant problems with breathing, in fact severe pneumonia is usually the most common cause of death in someone with measles. i do want to say, the death rate is still relatively low depending on your perspective, one out of 1,000 or so children will succumb to this type of infection. but this is obviously concerning. we don't know why this particular day care has been affected like this. >> i get asked this all the time. i know the answer but i'm going to ask yo

dr. sanjay gupta. we have all sorts of questions for you.bout it? what is it? how bad is it? >> this is an organism that's been around for some time. we call it a super bug because typical traditional antibiotics don't really work well on these bacteria. they're really hard to kill. part of the reason they've become so hard to kill is because we've tried to kill them with antibiotics and they evolve. >> this organism releases an enzyme that inactive vats the antibiotic. they're smart bugs. they've been around for some time. the idea of scopes being linked to this has been around for some time. we're hearing about this because of what's happened at ucla. doctors, people who have been dealing with antibiotic resistance have been thinking about this for several years now. >> explain this are scopes spreading it? >> in a sort of unconventional sense. this organism can live in certain parts of our body totally fine in our gutt not cause a problem at all. so scope goes in does its job, also pulls a little bit of the bacteria out. goes to get clean

dr. sanjay gupta has been looking at this.right outside of the studio when i was grilling you on this. what's your take on this? >> i think it's a very big deal. i think this is a big study. it's a good study. this has been a divisive issue within medicine for some time. i get this question all the time. why are peanut allergies going up? the answer has changed as a result of this study. these were high-risk children. children who already had allergies. so there was a concern about these children. they did skin tests on them so a kid with a catastrophic reaction was eliminated from the study. kids who had sensitivity were in the study. half the group got bepeanuts an others did not. as young as 4 months an age they got an extract. 14 out 2 out of 100. you don't see data like this. sevenfold different between the two groups. >> that's the thing. the results here are staggering which begs the question, how could we not know this if it's that obvious in a simple study? you can't send a peanut within 100 miles of your kids' school

dr. sanjay gupta. so sanjay what you saw in gary piece, this couple's baby was just a few months old, too young to get the measles vaccination. so what do you do if you have a kid that's too young to get vaccinated? >> well that is why this principle of what is known as herd immunity matters so much. it means that when you're getting your child vaccinated you're helping your child, preventing your child from getting infection but helps others as well. think of it as the people who can't get vaccinated and besides too young, other people as well that can't get vaccinated. people who may be have a certain, cancer or compromised immune system women that are pregnant or may become pregnant. it's a pretty big group when you put it all together. but if there are a lot of people vaccinated in the country, over 90%, you essentially think of those people as developing a sort of herd around people who can't get vaccinated they kind of prevent the measles virus from getting in to the vulnerable people. >> what ca

dr. sanjay gupta and seth manuga autism vaccine controversy, director of m.i.t.'am in science writing. parents in gary's report laid out the biggest concerns for parents choosing not to vaccinate, one is that there's just too many shots and given too early. what do you say? what does science say? >> we've heard that circulating quite a bit. the number of shots and people equate that saying is this too much of an insult to the child's body and their immune system? the answer is that it's not and in fact if you look over time you'll find that the amount of vaccine that we actually give has decreased. i have a graph i want to show quickly if i can, anderson. take a look. the graph on the left side reflects the amount of vaccine, the amount of antigen dating back to 1980. close to 3500 is the number there and it's come dramatically down over the last 30 40 years. and so we give a lot less vaccine despite the fact that the number of actual shots are higher the amount of mode is much lower and still you see the autism rates have continued to go up. we don't give as much

dr. sanjay gupta and dr. redletter, president of the children's health fund. we're getting a lot of questions from facebook. i want to know your reaction to what senator paul said there. he said he's heard all these cases. >> i don't know where he's getting that information, what he's citing. one of the adages in medicine is that correlation doesn't equal causation. he said i was just listening to his specific words, he said he knows of cases where children wound up having these profound mental problems after vaccines. but it doesn't mean that the vac convenience in any way had anything to do with them. if you look at the data it just doesn't bear that out. he's a doctor. i'm sure he's looked at some of the stuff. what he said there is not supported by science. >> dr. redletter, i saw you shaking your head when he said that. >> it's amazing to me that a physician, senator or not, is able to put out this kind of information. which is really dangerous. it's just simply not true. as sanjay was saying the evidence is absolutely clear that there's no relationship b

dr. sanjay gupta. >> the type of procedure, ercp is a scope procedure that looks at the gallbladder and pancrease kind that looks in your stomach if you're worried about reflux disease or colon cancer screening. this is a different type of scope. exactly as you said this procedure was performed nearly 200 times between october and january. what they found is the scope despite being cleaned the way it was supposed to be cleaned still was having this resistant bacteria attached to it that was then subsequently infecting other patients. we know of seven patients who became infected this way. as you mentioned, two of them have died. all these other patients are getting these home testing kits now to find out if they have this infection as well. this is of very high concern. doesn't sound like any kind of breach of protocol here. but despite that this ends up being the vehicle, the mechanism by which this infection is occurring. >> that's one of the most interesting things about this sanjay we're not talking about a dirty hospital or one person really messed up. they followed the procedure laid out t

dr. sanjay gupta. he explains it all on "new day" new you. the studies say you're better off sitting on your couch eating bran flakes. >> that's what you took away from the studies, huh? they are interesting studies. we have to pay attention to them. they followed over 1 million women for nine years. i'll give you the headline in a second. what they were trying to do, john i'll prep this by saying what is the sweet spot in terms of exercise? what's going to give you the most benefit in terms of reducing your risk of heart disease. as you say, more is not necessarily always better. so again, 1 million women over nine years. let's take a look at the numbers here. look specifically at women who rarely or never exercise and their risk of heart disease, 5.2%. if you exercise two or three times a week it goes down significantly there. 3.5%. this is what you were paying attention to a lot of people are, john, daily. if you started exercising daily, 4.3% risk of heart disease. still better than if you never exercise at all but not quite as good if yo
