dr. sanjay gupta who spoke with sae senator mccain's doctors.really awful sad story about john mccain tonight. tell us what you know. >> well, you know, you remember he had this operation on friday, don. he was having a blood clot removed from above his left eye. we found out subsequent to that that blood clot was within his brain and they actually removed a portion of the bone there to get to the brain. we just found out just over the past few hours now that that blood clot was caused by a tumor. a type of brain tumor known as gleblastoma. it is an aggressive cancer. he is hearing this news now. i talked to the doctors. they said that he did very well from the operation. they feel like they removed all of the tumor. he was sent home the next day. has been recovering at home. but with this particular time of t tumor, it almost always requires follow-up treatment. that's the discussion senator mccain and his family are having with his doctors. i think you put it well, don. everyone is thinking about him, rooting for him. i think they're thinking

dr. sanjay gupta is sonnian s sanjay, are there risks?> they recommended take a couple of weeks before you fly. two weeks. not an exact rule here. he had a really quick recovery. his operation on july 14th, home the next day. that sort of, really, gives a sense it won't be as risky certainly to fly. the biggest concern, just so you know, is when -- this is true of any operation. that you can develop pockets of air after an operation, and with lower pressure, that air will expand. can happen after joint surgery, for example. can happen in the brain. but the doctors are not that concern and don't think there's significant amounts of air. this is how the conversation went, john. we don't necessarily recommend this but won't get in your way either. >> let me ask you a question. maybe outside of your bounds, you're a neurosurgeon. what about the psychology? we know senator mccain wants to be in the arena. somebody with a diagnose, not a great diagnosis, not looking three, five years down the road but the here and now. how much does that play i

dr. sanjay gupta. sanjay, thank you.w you've spoken to john mccain's doctors with the permission of the senator. how do you think he looked and sounded today? >> i think he looked really good. we saw him walking, getting off the plane, and speaking. you know, he was -- his speech was fluent. he's got no evidence of weakness. his energy was good. he obvious you can obviously see the scar over the eyebrow. he has a black eye, which is common after surgery like this. but he looked good, erin. he had a quick recovery from the start, but 11 days out he looked really good. >> it's incredible. i know he went straight to the senate floor from the airport. he voted. he spoke for about 15 minutes. that's exhausting, right, for anyone? but after that, i know he did cancel a press conference he was planning on doing. what do you make of that? >> well, i think that we clearly have -- we see how he's doing on the floor of the senate, able to speak fluently and have that energy. sometimes people do get very tired when they've had an op

dr. sanjay gupta, to you. no one better to talk about senator mccain's surgery because you are a neurosurgeon. >> when you read the description, he said he had an eyebrow incision and blood collection removed. i think it's more serious than that. when you feel your own eyebrow, you can feel the bone underneath that. as part of this procedure, senator mccain had that bone removed to gain access to the brain. i want to show you on the skull, right above your eye socket, it's this bone here in particular that was removed to gain access. you get a small incision, but it can give you a big opening there, to the brain. just to show you, again, here on this brain, once you have opened up that bone, you are gaining access to this part of the brain and what you hear is there was about a five centimeters, about two inches abnormality there. they call it a blood collection. we are not sure, essentially what it is until it's looked at under the micro scope. it's brain surgery. it's a good size operation. it's general an s

dr. sanjay gupta is joining us now. sanjay, this came as a shock to everyone.s wonderful to see he is a fighter just on twitter. you spoke with senator mccain's doctors. what did they say? how is he doing? >> he's recovering extraordinarily well. he had brain surgery last friday, he's 80 years old, he had general anesthesia. doctors told me as soon as he woke up he was cracking jokes and doing well. he spent the night in the intensive care unit last friday, but was discharged to home saturday, which is speedy by any account, especially given the fact he's 80 years old. he's recovering well. what happens, typically, it takes a few days to be certain from the pathologist exactly what caused this bleeding and they found out over the last day or so, in fact, it was this brain cancer, as you mentioned, a type of cancer known as glioblastoma. it's a tumor that bled. that's what caused the bleeding. it's a brain cancer meaning it comes from the brain itself as opposed to elsewhere in the body and spreading to the brain. that was a surprise, i think to everyone. the do

dr. sanjay gupta suggests that mccain's condition is fairly serious.t happens if the arizona senator is out for longer than a week. >> it's going to make life a lot more difficult for senate majority leader mitch mcconnell, jake. that's because right now he is holding onto 50 republican votes to even get this bill to the floor to begin debate. and the longer that this debate goes on behind closed doors, the more difficult it's going to be to keep those 50 senators intact at this point. there are two republicans who have said that they can't vote for the bill in its current form or even vote for the motion to proceed to get it to the floor. many of these senators remain undecided because there has yet to be a score from the congressional budget office, and exactly the impact this bill will have on insurance coverage numbers and exactly how much it's going to cost. but even the president understands how important john mccain's role is in this entire process. listen to what he said at the white house just a few minutes ago. >> we hope john mccain gets bet

dr. sanjay gupta joining us on the phone. sanjay, you know senator mccain's medical history very well.mined his medical records when he ran for president in 2008. give us a sense how serious this latest procedure was. >> wolf, when you read the initial descriptions it didn't sound that serious. you heard about an incision sort of in and around the eyebrow, and removal of a blood clot. what we've learned, though, i think, a statement released an incision made around the left eyebrow of senator mccain. you feel the left eyebrow, feel that bone behind there. that bone was actually removed. called a craniotomy. you do that to gain access to the brain. so this blood clot that they call it, five centimeters in size, was located in, or inside or just on top of the brain. that's a pretty significant procedure to expose the brain like that. we heard that he's doing well after the operation. that bone was placed back so, you know, he's -- that bone is now back in the appropriate position in the skull. the big question is, what exactly was that? abnormali abnormality. say a blood clot. was it cau

dr. sanjay gupta. president trump is waying in with his thoughts and sympathies for the family. sanjay, you had a chance to speak exclusively with mccain's doctor, with his permission about what he is facing. >> yeah. what we learned is senator mccain was feeling tired, fatigued the last few months, but nothing specific. he went in friday morning, this past friday for a routine check up, prescheduled. complained of fatigue and he had a little bit of double vision. it was enough for the doctors to order a c.a.t. scan, which ordered the blood collection. that day, he was in the operating room having that blood clot taken out through the incision above the eyebrow. as you point out now, and as we have heard, the blood collection, that bleeding was caused by a tumor. the tumor is known as a glioblastoma, a type of brain tumor, an aggressive type of cancer. that news is coming out as you reported. we know senator mccain and his family are talking ability his next steps. he is at home and recovering well, they tell me. that is what they are facing. >> this is the same kind of cancer t

dr. sanjay gupta, a neurosurgeon and medical correspondent is "outfront" with more.jay, you've spoken with mccain's doctors, of course, with the permission of mccain. what do you think about his travel to d.c.? is that safe? >> i don't think there's absolute rules on when somebody can travel, is what you'll hear most doctors say ten days after a brain operation like this. but, you know, he's been -- i will say that he's had a pretty quick recovery. we talked about this before. even the day after his surgery he was home. i talked to his doctors, as you mentioned. they said he's been up and about and has been going back and forth from his house to the hospital and all of that. it's not surprising at all that he's talking about this. he's at the outer window of being able to do this sort of thing. >> he had a craneotomy. is there any concern that altitude could affect his condition? >> that's the concern. when the cabin is pressurized, the ground, you know, if there's air, for example, whether it's brain surgery or surgery in a joint, air can expand and that can cause p
