officials in oklahoma are offering free hiv and hepatitis tests today to as many as 7,000 patients of dr. scott harrington, the dentist and oral surgeon has stopped practicing after health inspectors found what they called sickening conditions in his office including filthy rusty dental tools. >> they say some of his staffers were unlicensed and that he may have given patients expired drugs. susan candiotti is in tulsa this morning, good morning. how are today's screenings going to work? >> reporter: good morning. in about three hours from now as many 7,000 invited as you mentioned, they're expecting hundreds of people to show up as they begin these tests. people will register inside the building that you see over my shoulder, and then they will be taken in to give three blood samples, one for hepatitis b, for c, and the test also for hiv, and these are all people that are former patients of dr. scott harrington, who is currently facing 17 complaints filed by the state board of registry. it will take about two to three weeks for these former patients of his and current patients of his to get th

they were tracing his movements and found he had been to the dentist office, the office of dr. scott harrington. and that's what prompted investigators to go to the office and they found deplorable conditions including using expired drugs, and improper sterlization of equipment and rusty dental tools that would go inside your mouth. that's when they decided we have to screen all of the former patients, at least 7,000 of them, at least that's the number they know of, and that's as far as the records go back. here is a former patient. >> we are all very concerned and, you know, apprehensive. you know, we just don't know until we actually do get tested, you know, whether or not -- it's just one of those things, you know. but we are all very concerned. >> susan, how are the testing going to work? >> reporter: it's going to take place over my shoulder, and this place is run by the health department and they are running the screenings and they are going to have to come in and give three samples of blood and be tested for hiv and hepatitis b and c, and it will take about two to three weeks

this for former patients of dr. scott harrington. 420 people waited in line at a city clinic for a free screening to see if they tested positive for hiv and hepititis. the test results won't be known for up to three weeks. authorities notified all 7,000 patients from the doctor's records. his medical files only went back six years. up until last week the doctor was treating patients in his two offices in the tulsa area for three decades. sham other people are at risk? -- how many other people are at risk? it is not known. the doctor handed in his license after a patient with no known other health risks tested positive for hepititis. authorities found numerous violations including improper use of sterilization equipment. the doctor has thought spoken publicly since the health scare erupted. according to one health care expert, doctors when treating a patient should always take precautions. >> as a surgeon, i always treat everybody a -- as they may have hiv or hepititis b and c. utmost sterilization skills need to be used.

expecting hundreds of people to show up as free screenings beginl for as many as 7,000 patients of dr. scott harrington. the dentist currently is facing 17 complaints filed by the state board of dentistry after inspectors found that he had deplorable conditions in his office. allegedly including use of filthy instruments, improper sterilization of dental instruments, using drugs that were expired among many other alleged violations. now, people will be coming here today to be screened for hepatitis "b" and "c" as well as hiv, and i asked one of the officials here what will happen after those tests are taken. >> it will take approximately two to three weeks for patients to receive test results. if someone receives a negative test result, they'll be notified via mail. if anyone were to test positive, they would receive a personal contact to reveal their results. >> reporter: health officials are telling the community they don't believe that they're facing an outbreak of hiv and hepatitis, but they're trying to tamp down any possibility of panic here in this area by organizing these free screen

dr. scott harrington is accused of running a practice so disgustingly unsanitary that he may have exposed thousands of patients to hepatitis or hiv. my colleague ed lavendera is on the story live with us in tulsa. ed, the head of the state dental board is saying when inspectors went into this place, they were, and i'm quoting them, physically sick. how much are we finding out about what they found? >> reporter: well, all these investigations or these visits to this dental practice you see behind me have happened over the course of the last two weeks. i'll give you just some of the highlights in the complaint that they have filed against dr. harrington. some of the things that they had found inside. rusted and unsterilized equipment, reused needles, nonsterile gaus, open vials of drugs answer even one drug vial that had expired in 1993. and as you mentioned, when the investigators on on the couple visits that they have made me and speaking with the assistants, they felt sick, and they described
