dr. richard strauss was and what he did. >> well, doc, dr. uss was our team physician and team for sigs for multiple teams at ohio state. he was high profile doctor within athletic community, he was not only employed at the ohio state university but he was also sanctioned by usa wrestling, the usoc and the ioc. my first interaction with doc strauss was as a 14-year-old high school student. he conducted research, at least what he disguised as research surrounding body fat and high school wrestlers. i believe he targeted high school wrestlers. it was one of the communities he was deeply involved in. during the body fat test hi did a lot of things you do, you pinch certain areas to measure and there's a procedure that you go by but the one thing that was strange and now i know to be unnecessary was a genital exam. that was 14. four years later, five years later i'm a freshman at the ohio state university, the first week of school each year the team participated in a -- you had to go through a physical. the last step of the physical was to go into

dr. richard strauss. he's accused of abusing athletes from 1979 to 1997. osu says, "we are aware of reports that individuals at the university did not respond appropriately during that era. these allegations are troubling and an area of critical focus of the current investigation." ohio congressman jim jordan was then an assistant coach and is among those accused of turning a blind eye. he denies it. osu's statement is a response to two class-action lawsuits filed by former wrestlers claiming officials ignored repeated complaints about the doctor. >>> the thai soccer team and coach rescued from that cave last week will be released from the hospital today, a day ahead of schedule. and in a few hours, they will make their first public appearance during a televised news conference. a thai health official saying all 12 boys and their coach are healthy physically and psychologically. they spent 18 days trapped under ground. it will be a welcome sight and sound to hear from those kids. >> i know, what a great success. >>> all right, what would you do if your car

dr. richard strauss. and he was the team doctor in athletics for many year hes, employed by the university from the mid 1970s through the 1990s. at this point they are in the midst of an investigation. ohio state university, through an independent investigator that was appointed by the ohio attorney general's office into alleged impropriety. and according to nbc news, athletes were he molested during examinations, that there were showers that were inappropriate. and one former athlete has spoken with cnn and says that jim jordan had direct knowledge of the molestation going on and he did nothing about it. jim jordan has responded, he says, quote, congressman jordan never saw any abuse, never heard about any abuse and never had any abuse reported to him during the time as a coach at ohio state. he has not been contacted by investigators about the matter. but will assist them in any way they ask because if what is alleged is true, the victims deserve a full investigation and justice. and brooke, the doctor

dr. strauss, and that investigation actually undertaken by an outside law firm that jordan has also attackedm talking about, he did acknowledge that there was locker room talk. he said it was different than abuse. but something doesn't smell quite right here. >> no, i mean this is long time ago. standards of conversation were different. we should acknowledge that while at the same time recognizing that abuse is abuse. it is the requirement, the responsibility of someone in a position of authority as mr. jordan was to take it seriously, whether or not it is portrayed as a joke, whether or not it's portrayed as a kind of chuckling sort of thing. and he seems not to have at least according to many of these folks coming forward. and that's a problem. >> paul kaine, can you sort of put in context for us what wrestling and the ohio state wrestling program would mean to jim jordan? >> jim jordan's political identity was really kind of formed in his days as a high school wrestler and can legolle wrestler. it is also increasingly become more of a rural and ei white sport. and that is what founded his

dr. richard strauss for allegedly abuses students from the mid-1970s to the mid late 1990s. a former wrestler saying the doctor touched him inappropriately starting as a teen and sexually molested some other teammates, as well. that wrestler, michael desabato said it was common knowledge of team members about the doctor and what he would allegedly do during examinations. he said he and others spoke about it openly. openly about inappropriate dutching and he says staff including jim jordon who was a wrestling coach at the time, he says knew about what the doctor was allegedly doing. now, this wrestler spoke to cnn. he says the doctor was more prolific in his abuse and operated over a 20-year period. he was able to systematically abuse students in over 15 sports and no one did anything. it should be noted that the republican congressman jim jordan strongly denies he ignores allegations of abuse. his office released a statement about the allegations which says, quote, congressman jordan never saw any abuse, never heard about any abuse and never had any abuse reported to him dur

dr. richard strauss and it was when jim jordan was the assistant coach.aid that he never specifically told jordan, but that larkin hall, which was this open facility where it seems like professors showered, athletes, male athlete s showered. he said larkin hall where the athletes showered was a pedophile's dreamland and if jordan didn't know, he was living under a rock. but he does describe jordan as a class act. now, another former wrestler, mike alf said he didn't consider it abuse at the time. that the wrestlers joked about it. but the physicals were weird, it was inappropriate behavior. he doesn't believe jim jordan knew and said if he did know, he thinks jordan would have done something. another unnamed former wrestler tells us that coach russ hellickson and jordan had to know because they were in the shower when the doctor was in the shower and the doctor was in the shower for a along time. you know, poppy, in the defense, jim jordan in his own defense is talking about character fallacies in some of these accusers. and it is true that one of the mos

dr. richard strauss.abused and molested young male athletes at the university during that time. now he is deceased, but the investigation commenced in april. and they are talking to former athletes, coaches, personnel, from over 14 different sports at ohio state university, including wrestling. that's where jim jordan enters, because he was an assistant wrestling coach during part of the time that that position was at ohio state university. i spoke with michael disabato yesterday, he is a former wrestler. he says that jim jordan was the assistant coach while he was there, and he says it was common knowledge to what this doctor was doing to many of the athletes in sports, including the wrestling team. he said they'd sit around the locker room and talk about it. he said they would, quote, joke, about when you went to the doctor what was going to happen to you. listen what he said to me yesterday, including what this doctor allegedly did to michael. >> i was close to both jim and coach. we talked openly with

dr. richard strauss. that was the doctor for the wrestling team in the mid '90s.hen jordan was the assistant wrestling coach. he was too embarrassed to report it to jordan at the time. he said jordan took part in the conversations where strauss' abuse of many other team members came up. it would be wildly out of the range of normal for an assistant coach not to be part of conversations about the conduct of a team doctor. i mean, you know, my brother and sisters played college sports. those are small traveling units that usually hear not just things that affect the team but hear about everyone's personal lives. it seems as an investigator, these would be credible accounts. >> there is a growing body of evidence here, as you said, even one more today as we are speaking, with too many details, too many people, too many details. we've seen this eerily play out before just recently, usa gymnastics, penn state university, when you have this combination of facts, you have to get very, very concerned. and as you said, an assistant coach engaging in discussion with this wi

dr. richard strauss claiming he sexually assaulted students starting in the mid 70s through the late 09'sjordan was an assistant coach to the team. the statement from jordan's office is defiant and unequivocal saying that congressman never saw any abuse, never heard about any abuse and never had anything reported to him. what is his law firm saying? >> the legal counsel for ohio state university says they did previously contact jim jordan's office by e-mail and phone to request that he participate in an interview. they say he has not responded to those requests. >> he said despite claims to the contrary, he has not received a request from the investigative team. we demand they send us the communication and remain willing to assist in any way that we can. the team physician forage lettics from 1981 through 1995 at the university, he treated athletes from 14 sports there including wrestling. and that's where he overlapped with now congressman jim jordan, a former assistant wrestling coach. ohio's attorney general's office in conjunction with legal counsel for ohio state launched an independ

dr. strauss. he was continuing to work at ohio state once i left so yeah, knew the doctor. talked to other coaches, they didn't know of any abuse. >> a former ohio state wrestler has suggested he could be lying. >> you have the most conservative member of the u.s. congress lying to reporters about his knowledge of serial sex abuse. >> jordan is high profile as the founder of the conservative freedom caucus in the house. he said he would have spoken up if he had been aware. >> the things he said are not true. we knew of no abuse. if we had we would have reported it. the things they said about me are flat out not true. >> these are serious allegations and the university has rightfully initiated a full investigation into the matter. the speaker will await the findings of that inquiry. the timing is awkward for jordan since he is expected to run for speaker as a conservative alternative. jordan's allies on capitol hill saying he would be the first to stand up for justice. >> leland: about the timing on this. was the accusations against the doctor coming out at the same time the
