dr. todd curtis spoke to us about these issues. >> this is someone who attacked tsa who is set up to do a variety of things but they were not set up with law enforcement power. however there is a layer of security at i remember which includes police and law enforcement support. that sort was very much evident at los angeles. that part of the system, having law enforcement protecting the security check point areas did actually work. they were able to take down this person. >> so when you say that, it sounds like you're saying this actually could have been a lot worse? >> certainly. from all appearances it looks like this was a lone lone persot someone with a coordinated group. they could have easily overwhelmed any checkpoint in this country. but the fact of the matter there is more than one way to protect the airport and the aircraft and to protect the people in that airport. certainly if this person had an intent to randomly kill passengers they don't have to go beyond the checkpoint. there are thousands of people in the non-secure area of the lax who would have been easy targets. but th

dr. todd curtis spoke to us about these issues. >> reporter: this was an unusual attack. it was not a passenger trying to come through normally and sneaking a gun through. this is someone who attacked the security checkpoint as part of his strategy. and tsa was set up to do a variety of things. what they weren't set up to do was to be an armed police officer. they don't have law enforcement powers. they don't have law enforcement options such as carrying weapons with them. however, there is a layer of defense at every airport that includes police and other levels of support. and that support was evident in los angeles. that part of the system that is having law enforcement protecting the security checkpoint areas did actually work. >> so when you say that, it sounds like you're saying that this actually could have been a lot worse. >> certainly. from all appearances it looks like this was a lone person, not someone who had a coordinated plan with several other people. certainly if you had a group of people who were armed the way this person was, they could ea easily overw

dr. todd curtis, now we want to return to the philopenas where that massive effort is now underway to getid to the people. relief workers are now encountering difficulties to get supplies to those that need them the most. setting in as survivors wait for help. more from northern sea bourn. a cry for help from the children. landed in the northern part of the island. most managed to survive, but many are left with nothing. we ran to the mountains and we are still staying in a little hut used to dry sugar cane. with they have yet to receive any aid. although many people managed to survive, they also badly need water and food. mary ann and her husband were just burying their mother when the storm hit. hungry and has been drinking on condensed milk for five days. >> even if we get a little bit of help, we would be so grateful, all of us here would share it. the few organizations and volunteered have already reached here. >> the problem with the water and the sanitation, and of course now the most pressing also shelter. because of the constant drain, and they have no homes to go back to. >> onl

dr. todd curtis. are you there? >> yes, i am. >> can you tell us what is happening right now? what type of security measures are in place, especially when you are talking about an airport the size of lax and thousands of customers, and that may be an understatement. >> lax is a unique airport. it's not only a major airport, it's a very high profile airport which has had events in the past like this. so this is probably something the los angeles police and airport police have dealt with. and one key thing to think about right now is when it comes to securing the airport, there are multiple levels of security at the airport. tsa, which was the focus of the shooting actually is not a law enforcement organization, and they don't have weapons training or defensive weaponry to protect themselves. >> what are they told to do if there is a gunman. >> in general they defer to the law enforcement and other security personnel at lax. very likely you are going to have law enforcement there, especially in an emergency situation like this, and there may be additional resources there because
