block's art style has evolved from that mid western tight pen and ink drawing to a very loose drawing style, but much more loose he oouss a lot of graphite, a lot of ink brush. and he's using a board, a step willed board. so it grabs the pencil and gives it a nice texture. and he used whiteout both as a way to control his mistakes, but also to enhance his image. so, for example, on this canoe being guided by president kennedy, he's got budget written in whiteout on top of the ink and pencil so that it stands out in his cartoon. kennedy was hard for most cartoonists to draw. he was a handsome looking fellow and even as late as 1962 they really hadn't found like big ears or big nose or something that stood out too to make him look funny. so he kind of looks generically handsome for the entirety of his administration. that doesn't mean that mr. block didn't find fault to pick with him. in this particular cartoon is about the kennedy administration's desire to implement tax cuts but to end some special privileges for people who had benefited from special tax cuts. next, we have linden joh

we have a range of drawing here -- drawings here of planes in world war i. this is perhaps my favorite in the collection. this depicts a newport 28 airplane, which was the first type of airplane american squadrons flew in world war i. you can see the movement of the airplane very well depicted in this drawing. the artifact behind me was also quite an interesting object. this is a piece of fabric from an american pilot's airplane in world war i. you see the insignia, which is the uncle sam hat in a ring. the famous phrase in 1917, when the united states during the war, declared war in april 1917, was that the united states had thrown its hat in the ring. that became the symbol of the first american fighter squadron. the 94th squadron, the hat in the ring squadron. this particular piece was donated a couple of years ago by a gentleman who was in his mid-90's. his father was a mechanic with a the 94th, and took this piece of fabric off a fairly well-known pilot, cook, who had a number of combat victories. he saved that fabric and gave it to his son and had in t

these two cartoons are by ann who draws for "the washington post." ann does political cartoons that are often an mittimated gives. she won the pulitzer prize i think it was back in 2000 for her static political cartoons, and it has moved on to animation. i think these were studies that ann did for animation she created around the inauguration of obama. and ann's got a different style. she's not a cross hatcher, she actually went to cal arts and is a trained animator. you can see it in her very strong line style that really stands out. she now works also in watercolor as well. the hay-adams has a sort of special place in washington, and this bar in particular. the first time i came in the bar was probably 17 years ago and a friend of mine came -- brought me down here. you could still smoke in bars in washington and this was a smoking bar. this was a cigar bar. we came in on a cold winter night and i had just moved to washington from the west coast and was fascinated by the culture of the city. and you walked in here and there was this inversion layer
