drew host of "dr. drew" on hln. we heard how important music was to her and how her lifestyle choices led to the condition of her voice. she was a smoker. she battled drugs for many years. why would a talent, you know, who depends on her voice allow that one instrument to be damaged in that way? >> there's a couple things i want to say about that interview. one, the fact that you would call what she was doing a lifestyle choice is a grave misunderstanding about what was going on with whitney houston. she had addiction. it's not a choice. if they had choice, believe me, they would choose not to use drugs. they lose choice. the other thing, he was describing how powerful she was, that is whitney the using addict. powerful, demanding. it's how addicts are. it's how they get their way. people around addicts have difficulty containing them. if you look at the 2009 interview that oprah did, you can see the sober whitney who was quiet and lovely. the gorgeous woman we expect. when using, you see the terrible behavior. when

drew pinsky, host of "dr. drew" on hln. we don't know what houston died of.waiting the toxicology results. what can happen to a human body when even a small amount of prescription drugs are mixed together, and, worse, when alcohol is added to that mix? >> you think about the umbrella term central nervous system depressants, a big term, but basically it means these medications, even in isolation can depress your central nervous system and affect the things you don't think about in your body, ability to regulate your heart rate and blood pressure and drive to breathe. it says something that people should try to be mindful of. when you add things together and mix in alcohol as well, it's not a 1 plus 1 equals 2 situation. when they say this term synergistic, they're saying in combination, they're somehow worse rather than being additive. the things you don't think about are affected, blood pressure, heart rate, breathing is a possibility with mixing these medications. >> dr. drew, whitney's last performance was with singer kelly price, impromptu two nights befor

drew.ve days just to shut my girlfriend brandy up and my mom up, and i ended up staying nine and a half months. i relapsed in treatment, and my dealer at that point had hooked me -- i thought i was buying cocaine, but he hooked me on heroin, speed, horse tranquilizer and rat poison. >> were you aware of what you were buying? >> no. i had no idea what i was getting. i just wanted to escape, and at that point i was in such a dark place, and i was so spiritually sick and i was so physically sick. i didn't understand why i was, like, nodding out and why, you know, i was bleeding more through my nose and why it wasn't working anymore, and i just remember being -- i kept hearing about dr. drew, and it wasn't shutting him up at that point. >> so what clicked? how did you change your life? >> my mom and my family. i just knew that i couldn't get sober again. and i felt like, wow, i'm not even dying quick enough. so i went back to the treatment facility where i got sober. the other doctor, not dr. d

i drew a remedial plan for maryland after they struck down the state's plan because it didn't show due regard for a political subdivision lines and some states have rigid pronouncements about obeying county and city lines and sort of get a pass so different states and i think i was just counting, missouri, pennsylvania, and idaho have all had courts that have struck down the plans on political subdivision grounds just in the last i guess month, and then you have some of these other criteri criterion. arizona which has a commission has a requirement that some of the districts be competitive, and they were in litigation for six years in the 2000 round because of that. others have you know certain types of community of interest criteria, and a lot of it, you know, if you're aggrieved by the redistricting plan for partisan reasons or otherwise you throw all that at the wall and see what sticks, and there's been some success in the state courts on those different grounds. >> and of course a lot of the state courts themselves are elected in partisan elections, and so they are perhaps more cl

drew pinsky of hln's dr. drew. dr.mpion over the past week for saying over and over again that the adults around whitney houston who knew she was at a party, who knew she was drinking were fooling themselves ifs they said, oh, she's okay, knowing the problems that she had leading up to her death. in that environment, what are your thoughts for an 18-year-old who is fin that same environmen? >> well, we have two issues here. one is an individual, whitney houston, who had current, recalcitrant addiction, was with treated and failed multiple times, who continued to drink and use, and people around her co-signing that, saying, oh, isn't it wonderful she's out socializing, toasting with champagne, as opposed to saying, my goodness, we have a very serious problem here with whitney. she is in harm's way, she's still drinking, she cannot maintain abstinence, we've got to get her out of the limelight, away from work and into treatment. that is one issue. the other issue is poor bobbi kristina. people are obviously concerned abo
