dylan dreyer, thank you very much for all those models and heads up.et's go to one of those areas that's very busy making preparations ahead of the storm. nbc's al roker is live in rehoboth beach, delaware. al let's get the story from you. it looks like a beautiful day but there's something looming out there. >> there is, alex. and it's interesting, when we came in last night we didn't see boarded up windows, anything like that. the supermarkets weren't very crowded. and, in fact, along the boardwalk here in rehoboth beach later this morning they're going to be having a halloween parade. so the people here aren't getting all worked up about it just yet. but they need to. because, this thing is, as dylan said, of historic proportions. once it passes by here, and again, you've got to remember, the tropical force winds extend out 450 miles from the center of this storm. so it is a monster storm. and it is going to reintensify. it will become a category 1 storm again. and as it makes its way up the coast, and then makes that hook left as dylan talked about

we get the latest now from nbc news meteorologist dylan dreyer.model is predicting an accurate landfall? >> it's an interesting situation. normally when we talk about a hurricane, it's exactly where that eye of the storm crosses over land where we see our biggest impacts. but because this storm is so huge, no matter where you are in the jersey shore, long island, new york city itself, down through delaware, down into maryland, we're all going to feel similar effects. that rough surf, the storm surge up to around four to even ten, eleven feet high and then the torrential rains and then the extreme gusty winds. look at this situation. i want to explain to you what's going on and why we are all saying this is such an historic event. here we see the storm swirling well to the east of the carolinas, still more than 300 miles to the east. look how the rain extends into southern new jersey, delaware and washington, d.c. you see what's going on back through ohio, into the pittsburgh area? that's the cold front. it's not moving west to east like norming, i

we begin here in studio with nbc meteorologist dylan dreyer.this storm, dylan? >> alex, it is still a category one hurricane. it's going to fluctuate between a category one and tropical storm, back over to a category one most likely. then it takes on a whole different characteristic as it approaches the shoreline of what looks like new jersey. that's where it is expected to make landfall somewhere in the new jersey area or the del marva area. either way this is a massive storm. we're not tracking it like a hurricane in that the eye wall is going tonight area hardest hit. the whole storm is massive. we have tropical storm force winds extending 450 miles out from the center of the storm. right now sustained winds with the storm are 75 miles per hour. but it is still very far away. 340 miles almost to the northeast of miami. so look at how huge it is. and it is bringing those rain bands along shore through north carolina and through south carolina. northeastern north carolina and southeastern virginia will be almost a pivot point that will just be

let's go back to nbc's meteorologist dylan dreyer. what can we expect in the next few hours? >> reverend, things are going to go downhill. the storm has officially made landfall. it barrelled in and took a west turn and headed right towards the southern new jersey coastline. we have winds gusting up to 48 miles per hour in atlantic city and go just north of that, in new york city itself, 71 mile-per-hour wind gusts and islip that gets the strongest winds. it arrives in long island around 8:00, 8:30. that's on top of the normal high tide and this storm system now that it's made landfall will gradually weaken but the winds are not going to ease and the rain is still going to come down. we're going to see several inches of rainfall. 8, 9, 10 inches of rain likely. we're also getting storm out of this system. it's hard to believe that we're talking about storm, too. we'll see more of a foot of snow but in the next couple of hours we are only going to see things get worse and there is that snow coming down. it's that hybrid snow, the cold front that merged with the hurricane. it i

nbc meteorologist dylan dreyer is back with us strtracking it . >> the same storm is bringing snowfall to west virginia, and the wind gusts just to the south coast beaches of lake erie and portions through the great lakes region, we are certainly dealing with wind gusts still on the order of 30 to 40 miles per hour. the waves have been churned out. i'm getting tons of pictures sent in from lake erie especially. it's looking more like an ocean rather than just a great lake. this is a huge storm. we're also talking about those blizzard conditions back across west virginia. winds are now starting to ease a little bit, and the snow we saw across southern ohio is starting to transition back over into some rain. so it is back over to just the mountainous regions of west virginia where we have already picked up nearly 30 inches of snowfall. davis, west virginia is one of those spots that is a jackpot region for snowfall. it's a town full of elderly residents and most of that town is without power right now. another 3 to 6 inches is still possible as this storm continues to produce snowfall th

nbc news meteorologist, dylan drei drei drooi dreyer. >> we wanted to come back to rochester and we are stuck here. >> all right. nearly 16,000 flights were canceled because of sandy. more than 6,000 just today alone and there are still some flights that have been canceled already for tomorrow. >>> nbc's tom costello joins us live from reagan national airport. tom, when do we expect things to return to semi-normalcy. i know this ripple effect is big. >> reporter: it really depends on the airport. here at washington reagan airport, you can see it is still really quiet and we are just now on the status board starting to show half a dozen flights and that's it. half a dozen flights where they are looking at flights coming in this afternoon and starting to go out. it is a small trickle. keep in mind the washington airports were not affected by the storm. yes, we saw the airlines cancel their flights in and out of here, but there's no damage, not like we had in new york city's airports. philadelphia, jfk, newark and all of the airports up and down the east coast in that particular area have

for that we turn to nbc meteorologist dylan dreyer standing by. >> we still have a category 1 hurricane moving northeast at about 12 miles per hour. but it is going to still take that northwest turn as we go into monday. here you see the heavy rain moving still on shore. the heaviest of it just off the coastline. but we have had some pockets of heavy rain across northeastern north carolina. we do have sustained winds up to 20 miles per hour with gusts as high as 35 to 40 miles per hour with this storm. this area of high pressure to our northeast. it is blocking the storm from going east. that's why it's going to take that turn to the northwest. and anywhere from new jersey down through the delmarva peninsula, this should make landfall, kind of as a post tropical storm. it is going to change in nature a little bit as it makes its way closer to the midatlantic. either way, it is a huge storm. it is going to bring its worst impacts to the area from new york city all the way down into washington, d.c. and delaware and maryland monday evening into tuesday morning. new york has already taken
