. >>> our meteorologist dylan dreyer is in the studio with us. dylan, where should we be focused tonight? >> there are several tornado watches in effect including major cities like chicago and st. louis. we've also seen a lot of activity across northeastern ohio and northern west virginia. they're firing up ahead of a cold front that will move east. sets up across the great lakes tomorrow morning and the east coast as we go into friday evening. we are looking for widespread, severe storms with tornadoes likely, anywhere from texas up into the southern great lakes. we could also see heavy downpours, dangerous cloud to ground lightning, wind gusts near 75 miles per hour, and hail about two to three inches in diameter. we are looking for threat of severe storms friday, too, but they will not be as severe as today. we still could see an isolated tornado, but there's a much less chance of that, and the whole storm system, lester, is gone by the time we get to the weekend. >> dylan dreyer, thanks very much. >>> history could be made as early as tomorro

for more on what we can expect, let's bring in meterologist dylan dreyer. dylan, good evening to you. >> good evening, carl. there are a lot of storms out there right now. we have a tornado watch in effect across the southeast. we also have a severe thunderstorm watch in the southern plains moving into the midwest. that's really an area we need to focus on over the course of the next several hours. that area in orange including most of arkansas, parts of western tennessee, this is where we could see wind gusts up near 65 miles per hour. very large hail and we also can't rule out an isolated tornado. now, tomorrow this threat is going to spread to the east. we'll see heavy rain in the morning. then we're going to see a line of potentially strong storms develop through the afternoon and evening from philadelphia right down through most of florida, again, we're looking at very large hail, damaging wind gusts and also an isolated tornado although the threat of tornados is much less for tomorrow but we have to watch out for heavy downpours. we have some flood wa

meteorologist dylan dreyer is here. dylan, i see a lot of red in your map. what are we looking at? >> it's in that area, lester, where we could see some of our strongest storms tonight with wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour. hail 2 inches in diameter. also our best chance of tornadoes across tennessee and up into kentucky where around where kerry sanders is there has been some tornado warnings in that area. now, we also have the threat of flash flooding especially across northern kentucky with those heavier downpours that we're seeing with those thunderstorms. this cold front will move east and the storms will weaken as we go into tomorrow morning exiting the east coast by tomorrow, but on the back side of it we could see as much as 2 to 4 inches of snow of all things across central and northern new england. >> all right. dylan, thanks. see you on "today" in the morning. >>> now what's being called an incredible story of survival. a 37-year-old man reported missing two months ago found alive from the overturned hull of his sailboat by a passing ship off the north carolina coast. h

meteorologist dylan dreyer is monitoring it for us. dylan, what are we looking at here? >> reporter: there are major east coast cities under these tornado watches tonight. that includes philadelphia, washington, d.c., baltimore. it stretches all the way back down into atlanta. the situation is setting up like this. we have this cold front moving into some very unstable air. so even after midnight tonight we're still looking at the chance of some strong storms, then by tomorrow morning mainly just rain across new england. but in this orange area, that there's an enhanced chance of seeing not only isolated tornadoes but also large hail, damaging wind gusts up near 70 miles per hour and also dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning. if you're anywhere up and down the east coast tonight, you want to make sure to stay tuned to your local nbc station as these storms fire up. be on the alert. >> dylan, thanks very much. >>> dangerous weather being blamed for a horrific pile-up on a highway in wyoming. this chain reaction crash involving as many as 40 vehicles including a tanker carr
