abc's duarte geraldino reports. >> reporter: 15-year-old j.d. was standing in the hallway when police in brownsville, texas, fatally shot him. investigators say the eighth grader was armed. but the teen's father believes they opened fire too quickly. >> they overreacted. but shouldn't have been one in the head. >> reporter: brownsville police thought the teen had what looked like a handgun. it turned out to be this pellet gun. >> fortunately, no one else was hurt in this incident. >> reporter: officers were called to the school in the start of the day. the tense showdown was broadcast over the dispatch radio. >> holding a handgun. white shoes. blue jeans, red t-shirt. bald-headed. >> where is he? >> the office. the principal's office. we have visual from the front door. >> reporter: the school was on lockdown. students huddled under desks. officers say despite repeated orders, the teen refused to put the pellet gun down. then, in earshot of hundreds of students. >> take him out. shots fired. >> e.m.s. >> reporter: according to police, officers s

duarte geraldino reports she was born with a life threatening facial illness. >> reporter: her short life has been anything but typical. little sammy was born with a facial birth defect that made her an outcast in her ethiopian fishing village. >> it can produce a lot of additional problems besides the cosmetic aspect. >> reporter: dr. alejandro berestine and arranged for the little girl to come to the united states. her family couldn't do the trip, so the little girl is staying with nurse j era ldine moss. >> she was a challenge but you get so much back from these children. >> reporter: sammy will be going back to ethiopia soon to show her family her transformation. her foster mom says she already seeing a big difference in sammy's personality. >> when we went to the playground, before she had her surgery, she would just stand and watch the kids and cover her face. after she had her surgery, she would just jump in the playground and she was the leader. >> reporter: there's still a 10 to 15% chance of the condition coming back and sammy will still need follow up surgeries back home.

duarte geraldino has more for wjz on the recall. >> reporter: it is pulling off of store shelves. and the caffeine caplets. the swiss drug maker says the oamptd counter posts. >> first of all, you need to definitely be concerned about side effects. some of the drugs that could have been mixed cause a lot of drowsiness. recall was at a major facility, which was shut down last month, after fda inspectors found problems there. they decided to pull the products after receiving complaints of mislabeled bottles and broken pills. >> novartis says, if you don't have the product, don't use it. and contact the company for a refund. >> reporter: some of their over the counter pills may have been packaged with powerful painkillers. they sell it as percocet, endoset. but the fda isn't recalling those painkillers because the risk of stray pills is low, and so many patients rely on those medications. >> they know these prescription drugs are widespread. they don't want to create any kind of irrational fear. >> reporter: experts say, look at your medications closely. and if you have any questions
