dubois in world war i. i can think of no better historians to guide us through a conversation on the relationship of citizenship and protest in the american past. please give a warm welcome to our panel. [applause] >> thank you all for coming out. thank you, claire and gavin, for getting the ball rolling and coming up with this idea, and to john, crystal, and chad for agreeing to be part of it. we are going to each talk for minutes, no more than that, and then we will talk to each other. then you will talk to us and we will talk to each other. our theme tonight is protests and citizenship, and i want to start us off almost 200 years ago, when free african-americans in boston began calling themselves colored citizens. that self-description was an act of protest and an act of invention. to explain what i mean by that, i need to say a few words about the conditions of black freedom in the time before the civil war. but simply, there was much to protest. the massachusetts constitution said all men are born free

susan: tell me about w.e.b dubois' place in this picture. ms. nurridin: he is interested in thinking about how the collective race can be improved on a social level like angst through education and on a biological level. it is usually framed as a kind of respectability politics in terms of education and religion and moral improvement. but there is a biological underpinning about who is actually fit enough to constitute this talented population. i have a number of interesting little nuggets from his work. one was an article from margaret sanger's birth-control review, where he published in a special issue thousand titled "a negro number" about black people in and birth-control. the concluding in his article was something to the effect that like a vegetable -- he uses that comparison, quality of accounts and not mere quantity. having quality reproduction rather than just simply having children for the sake of having them. susan: people who are not susan: people who are not familiar with du bois, what was the time period in which he was active? ms.

many of them are like those men and those men wb dubois got great ideas about the books he should write never gave her credit but he got his ideas from her book and ida b wells was like i mentor that world country boy didn't give me credit. these young black men who are following in the footsteps following in more ways than one. i'll be a little shady and say that if you think about freddie douglas and the dudes were womanizers a lot of these young black male intellectuals and someone should say -- it. they are following their model. what i'm saying more directly and not talking about any particular but like with someone current black intellectuals are my friends and some of them or not but what i think they get i will say it in print and i challenge them about the way they like to take on ida b wells because she talked about blackman but they don't think about her as a feminist and unpublished you can google it. i won't call that brother same tonight is not trying to be messy. [laughter] i was willing to have the fights with them but i'm also saying they are drawn to those brothers for
